To Study or Not to Study?

I would like to find out the relation between the way college students study and their grades. My manipulated variables would be the amount of hours studied and I would compare the test results to conclude my research study.

My research question would be a correlation design. Research method by: naturalistic observation and case studies. I would let students record their natural study habits, splitting them into two categories: crammers and those who study regularly. (Regularly, but not necessarily long hours.) I would then compare their test results as a way to see if a specific way of studying results in higher grades. I would also do a case study on kids with especially low/high grades to see if any other factors may have influenced the results.

Hypothesis: I believe that students who study by pulling an all-nighter will perform better on tests overall. I think those who study all the information at once will have a better memory of all the topics covered in class. Those who study a few hours a day may not remember the topics covered from a few days before.

This test would benefit students because they can then study in a manner that will produce better results. A challenge to this experiment would be to consider the overall variation of intelligence levels in students and any other issues on the day that might affect their test taking.

Hi Everyone!

My name is Christina He, and I am a sophomore student. I plan on majoring in Finance, but I am not entirely sure. My favorite classes here at Baruch so far has been anthropology, communication, and living environment. (Nothing related to the business field!) I am a member of Beta Alpha Psi and Ascend.

I grew up in Chinatown, but since 2002, I have been living in Queens. My favorite hobbies are listening to music, reading a good book and online shopping. I haven’t found a good book in a while, so I haven’t been reading much.

A link I would like to share will be to a song from my favorite band Maroon Five: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=67amigWwAJQ&sns=em

"1. After reading the reflection writer’s description, what do you think was happening to them during the meditation on a physiological level? She was already not feeling her best, so doing another "homework assignment" probably didn't help, even though the intention was good. 2. Based on your readings throughout the semester, what areas of their central and peripheral nervous systems may have been effected during the meditation? For her, it didn't work because she seemed frustrated by this assignment. 3. What questions do you have for the writer about their experience? How do you normally relieve your stress? 4. Based on the description provided, would you be open to trying the same meditation exercise? I would not want to try the same meditation exercise. I think it is pretty lame following meditation directions from a video."

"1.After reading the reflection writer’s description, what do you think was happening to them during the meditaion on a physiological level? During the meditation, he/she was able to take a breather and relax a bit. 2. Based on your reading throught the semester ,what areas of their central and peripheralnervous systems may have been effected during the meditation? During meditation, the left frontal cortex if affected. 3.What questions do you have for the writer about their experience? What is your levels of measuring anxiety based on? 4.Based on the description provided, would you be open to trying the same meditation exercise? I've done yoga before, and during the end when they ask for reflection, I find myself panting out of breath more often than relaxing. It is a very fun exercise however!"

"I agree with your method of retrieving memories by contacting families and friends, looking at pictures. Even so, I don't think you should stop going to class. Going to school will help you have an easier transaction into a "normal" life. Especially as students, most of our experiences are lived out in school. I would hope that as a friend, you would join me in creating more experiences or sparking new ones."

"My initial thought when reading this post was that you are not very trustful. I guess it is true that with no memories, it is hard to distinguish who might try to manipulate you or scam you. As a friend, I would try to understand that you need time to build your trust in me. I would use encoding to try to spark your memory. I think in this case, time will be the most helpful in getting back your old life."

"I thought it was funny that you would find yourself via Google. Even if you didn't lose your memory, would you really find a lot of information about yourself unless you're a local celebrity or something? If I was your friend, I would show support, and use encoding---maybe take you to some places that we used to hang around at. I think it is very important for family to help out in reconstruction of the memory because even if you don't get the memories, you will still need them for support. I also noticed that you were pretty optimistic with losing your memory... :)"

"I agree with your choice of keeping all of your memories, both negative and bad. If I was your friend, I would hope that any time we spent together would be memorable. Life is not always happy and cheerful and it's the accumulation of hardships that we went through together that makes a friendship stronger. I would hope to reconstruct the memory by revisiting places that might spark a memory. Even if it isn't, it might help bring out characteristics that are similar to the old you."

"Hi Alice! Your dog is so cute! What language is the name translated from? I wish I had a farm too so my dog can play in the grass. It's so sad how in the city it's just gravel and cement. Also, I'm working two jobs too... but very short hours, so I guess it's not too bad. Maybe you should cutback on the Starbucks so you don't have to work? haha"
