Research: Should we drink tea for our health sake?

  • What area of interest/research question do you wish to explore through a research study design?
To find out whether drinking tea regularly lowers the level of individual’s ”bad” cholesterol (may lead to heart disease and diabetes) and obesity.
  • What variables or concepts are you looking to observe and/or manipulate?
    Individual’s health condition.
  • What type of design would best suit your research question? (Experimental, Correlational, etc)
Experimental design would best suit my research question.
  • What research method would you use to conduct your experiment? (Survey, case study, naturalistic observation, lab experiment, etc.)
I would use experiment to testify if those who consume tea frequently have higher probability staying away from obesity and high cholesterol level. And so, I would assign one group who have tea everyday and another group who don’t.
  • If applicable, what would you put as your independent and dependent variables?
I would put tea as independent variable and participants’ healths as dependent variable.
  • Give a hypothesis about what you think you might find.
I think those who consume tea as daily beverage would have better health than those who don’t.
  • What might be the benefits and implications of this study? In other words, who would gain from it?
Everyone, especially those who are already or ”on the border” having high cholesterol and obesity, would gain from it as it provides guideline for individuals to lose fat and body weight and reduce ”bad” cholesterol.
  • Please reflect on the process of designing this experiment. What were the challenges you faced? Was this more/less difficult than you expected? How?
The difficult part would be collecting participants for this experiment as people normally would reject to take part in something they don’t feel interested in or consider they will not be rewarded afterward.

Hello :D

Hello everyone! My name is Chun Ling Hung, and since people seems having difficulty to pronounce ”Chun” so you may call me Ruby. I am a transfer student in Fall 2011 and intend to major in accountancy next semester after fulfilling pre-business requirement in this semester. I was born and grew up in Hong Kong (yes! I love my hometown very much!). Besides parents, I have an elder brother who is six years older than I do but there’s no gap between us as we used to have sibling fights even until now! One thing interests me the most would be languages. I love learning languages as each has its way to express people’s thoughts and ideas. Therefore, I took Italian for three years back in high school period as foreign language course. Unfortunately, I forgot most of it already. I only memorize those simple greeting phrases, like good morning, how are you, and goodbye. But I guess it’s better than forget everything. Anyway, nice to meet all of you and have a great semester! 😀

"1. After reading the reflection writer’s description, what do you think was happening to them during the meditation on a physiological level? The practice of meditation helped the writer calming his emotional and mental states through his concentration of breathing, yet some external factors, like noise and pain in his feet, distracted him from focusing. 2. Based on your readings throughout the semester, what areas of their central and peripheral nervous systems may have been effected during the meditation? The neurons processed information between the central nervous system (the brain and the spinal cord) and the peripheral nervous system (parasympathetic nervous system) while the writer tried to relax his physiological state during the meditation. 3. What questions do you have for the writer about their experience? Did mediation successfully reduce the level of pain you had? If so, would you consider this method again in case a similar injury happens to you in the future? 4. Based on the description provided, would you be open to trying the same meditation exercise? I would definitely try this exercise as it loosens the writer's anxiety and tension and leads his mind getting more clear when he said ''reset my mind''. Plus, it is a good method for anyone who hardly falls asleep as a way to recover personal energy."

"1. What is your reaction to the choices made by the author of this Reflection in terms of which memories they chose to keep and which memories they are discarding. I agree with what u have said about not to remove or retain any of your memories as people learn from their mistakes in order to prevent repeating them again. Therefore, bad memories somehow represent as the guidelines to alert oneself from actions and behaviors. 2. How would you feel if this friend did not remember you (imagining that you are their longtime friend)? Of course I would be sad at the very first moment. However, I would quickly pick up my temper and find ways to recollect your memories back as I believe that you will remember me some time or other. 3. What role might you play in helping them reconstruct their memory? I think I would show pictures we have taken, take you to places we used to hang out at, bring you to meet our mutual friends, and tell you the experiences we have gone through together (like schools, parties, travels, etc.). 4. Based on what you’ve learned in class and through your readings, what memory encoding, consolidation, and retrieval techniques might you use or teach to help this person recover and reintegrate their memories? I might use retrieval techniques by showing pictures, accompanying her to places we hung out at, meeting friends, and telling experiences as these are the ways to recall the memories back from the past."

"Hi Katherine, I just saw your comment to my blog! Yes, I will go back Hong Kong this winter and I guess we should meet each other soon. :D Well, I have same situation as you do as I'm currently living with my grandmother too. And yes, I also speak more than one language at home in order to communicate with my grandmother. What a coincidence! :D"
