Is there a direct link between sleep and academic success?

  • What area of interest/research question do you wish to explore through a research study design? I’m interested in the role sleep plays in our grades.
  • What variables or concepts are you looking to observe and/or manipulate? The number of hours a student slept would be manipulated.
  • What type of design would best suit your research question? (Experimental, Correlational, etc) Experimental
  • What research method would you use to conduct your experiment? (Survey, case study, naturalistic observation, lab experiment, etc.) Random assignment of participants in their natural environments.
  • If applicable, what would you put as your independent and dependent variables? The number of hours slept would be the independent variable while the final grade in the class would be the dependent variable.
  • Give a hypothesis about what you think you might find. I predict that students who sleep more will do better in the class.
  • What might be the benefits and implications of this study? In other words, who would gain from it? Everyone would benefit from this study.
  • Please reflect on the process of designing this experiment. What were the challenges you faced? Was this more/less difficult than you expected? How? A challenge would be the differences in the student’s behaviors. Not all students are the same. This makes it more difficult than I expected because it’s almost impossible to find two or more students who are alike.

Why hello there

Hi, I’m Farzana and I’m a sophomore this semester. Even though I was born in Bangladesh, I was raised in America. I don’t really have any hobbies. I plan on minoring in Psychology. My favorite class so far has to be psychology. It’s really interesting. I’m not part of a club at the moment but I’m interested in joining one this semester.

"1. After reading the reflection writer’s description, what do you think was happening to them during the meditation on a physiological level? During the meditation process, it seemed as if the writer cleared their mind and for a new perspective of things 2. Based on your readings throughout the semester, what areas of their central and peripheral nervous systems may have been effected during the meditation? Both the parasympathetic and sympathetic would have been affected by the meditation. Most likely, their sympathetic nervous system was not activated which caused their anxiety level to drop while their parasympathetic nervous system would not be activated. 3. What questions do you have for the writer about their experience? You stated that before meditation, your physical tension was a 3 but after meditation, your physical tension was a 4. How did it increase if you do yoga often? 4. Based on the description provided, would you be open to trying the same meditation exercise? I would because the stress is just increasing and meditating would probably help manage it."

"1. What is your reaction to the choices made by the author of this Reflection in terms of which memories they chose to keep and which memories they are discarding. I'm not surprised she wants to keep all of them. 2. How would you feel if this friend did not remember you (imagining that you are their longtime friend)? I wouldn't feel hurt since they did lose all their memory. I would help this friend get back their memories in any way I can. 3. What role might you play in helping them reconstruct their memory? I would answer any questions that she has about her past and tell her things from my own memory. 4. Based on what you’ve learned in class and through your readings, what memory encoding, consolidation, and retrieval techniques might you use or teach to help this person recover and reintegrate their memories? I would use old pictures and videos to help."

"Nice to meet you Evan. I thought I was the only one that felt that way about the lectures on the brain. I couldn't seem to get off my phone during that class but I'm regretting it now."
