Memory

For this reflection, imagine that you were unexpectedly struck by a falling object, which caused you to experience retrograde amnesia. As we learned, retrograde amnesia is the loss of memories which occurred before the brain injury. In this case, imagine this accident has caused you to forget all your explicit memories from childhood up until you were struck by the falling object.

Luckily, a medication has been developed to help you recover your memories, but it’s up to you to guide the recovery process.

1. How would you begin the process of recovering your memory? Who would you turn to, where would you search, and how would you proceed?

To begin my process of recovering my memory, I would first turn to the people who helped me throughout childhood and adolescence-my parents, brother, relatives,  and friends. I have many memories with these people and if I start spending time with them, hopefully all my forgotten memories will slowly come back. I would also revisit the places I spend most of my time such as: home, school, work,  church, mall, and Manhattan. If I looked at past and present pictures, I think I would force myself to remember because there is proof that specific events did happen once in my life.

2. Please describe the emotional journey you imagine you would be going through as you attempt to reconstruct your life. Imagine the feelings you would have.

It would be a difficult and confusing journey for me. I would have no one to turn to and no where to go to. There are certain people I see and places I go when I am in a specific mood, and if I were to lose my memory, I would not know what to do. I would feel lonely and confused, and think that no one else understands myself but me.

3. Suppose you were able to pick and choose the memories you wanted to recover from your life. What types of memories would you choose to retain and what types of memories might you decide to edit out of your remembered experience? Positive, negative, painful, happy, angry, frightened, etc. Please elaborate and explain some your decision making process.

Throughout my life, I never had the feeling that I wanted to erase a memory or change it in some way. I feel that every memory allowed me to grow as a person and helped me in some way. Editing a memory will not change what actually happened. As we learned in class, we remember negative and emotion-filled memories more than other memories. Every memory, the good and the bad, can maybe help me regain all my memories back again.

The affect of having a sibling on social behavior

Those who have one or more siblings tend to be more used to having someone around and growing up with someone besides their parents next to them. However, we can assume that those who are born as an only-child spend more time alone than do those who have a sibling. Does having a sibling allow one to be more social and comfortable in the presence of others?

An experimental design would best suit my research question and to help test my hypothesis. A research method I would use to conduct my experiments would be naturalistic observation. In my experiment, I can observe a setting where many children spend their time in the presence of other children-like a playground. In this experiment, my independent variable would be children who have siblings compared to those who are only-child. My dependent variable would be the amount of socializing that occurs at the playground.

My hypothesis is that children with siblings at home will be seen playing with other kids more than children who are the only child at home.

Through this experiment, everyone can see the influence of having a sibling to a child. If my hypothesis is proven to be correct, we will see that it is important for children to have siblings in order to be active outside of the home.

It is somewhat difficult to perform this experiment because we can not really record our data in a specific way. But, we can just observe and see if the only child or the child with the sibling spends longer or any time time at all associating with the other children.

Hello~

My name is Ha Jung Lee but I prefer to be called Unice… yes, without the “E”. I am currently a freshman heading towards Accounting. I am able to speak English, Korean, and a little bit of French. I live in College Point, Queens, and it takes me approximately an hour and half to commute to Baruch every day. Unfortunately, Baruch was not my first choice of colleges and I plan to transfer out after my freshman year. This is my first time taking a course in Psychology and I’ve enjoyed it from day one. Out of all my classes, I must say that Psychology is the most interesting. Math is one of my favorite subjects. I’ve always found it easier to understand compared to other subjects. On my free time, I enjoy reading, jogging, and listening to music. I love to travel and try new foods of all cultures. I plan to make the best of my freshman year at Baruch by meeting new people and joining clubs that will help me in the future.

"Comment Prompt (Group’s A & B): 1. After reading the reflection writer’s description, what do you think was happening to them during the meditation on a physiological level? On a physiological level, he could have experienced a decrease in heart rate and breathing. Meditation helps to calm the body and mind, and focus attention while relaxing the body. Michael probably experienced a decrease in stress hormone, improved perception of the present moment, and deeper level of relaxation. 2. Based on your readings throughout the semester, what areas of their central and peripheral nervous systems may have been effected during the meditation? The parasympathetic part of the peripheral NS, which returns the body to a less active state. The prefrontal cortex of the brain in the CNS which is responsible for happy and optimistic thoughts. 3. What questions do you have for the writer about their experience? What thoughts came to your mind while you were meditating? Did you feel like your thought were more positive? And how were you able to stay so concentrated during the session? 4. Based on the description provided, would you be open to trying the same meditation exercise? If I had the patience and time, of course. I've always wished to try it but never had the chance. I think it will help me become more optimistic, stress-free, and relaxed."

"Hi Philip, I would also agree with your hypothesis because television is the biggest cause for my poor eyesight. But then again, some people are just born with bad eyesight or have hereditary causes that affect the sharpness of their vision. Case study is good for this experiment because you would need a long period of time to actually prove your hypothesis. Another possible method can be a self report that allows people to talk about their personal experiences with television and their eyesight."
