Research

Many students nowadays are technology junkies.  Meaning they are always on their phone, texting, tweeting, and even updating their status on Facebook.  I want to explore if communication technology, for example cells phones/iPads, have an affect on studying?

I will use two groups of student that are all taking the same class.  Half of the group participants are able to have their devices with them (hints the independent variable) and the other half does not have anything but their books and notes at hand (the dependant variable).  I am looking at the grades of exams that the students will take after a week of studying with and without the devices to see what group did better.

I would allow the controlled group to study with their devices and the experimental group will not have any devices but both of the groups will be studying the same amount of hours.  We will use experimental method to allow the groups to take the same test and then record their score.  After the exam I would conduct a survey or poll where they’ll be asked questions like:  how well do you think you did on the exam, was studying and focusing difficult for you, etc.

I think I would find that study do better when they have no distractions around them.  The student would gain from it if they knew it was get them a good grade and maybe continue practicing not having their phones.  And teachers would be happier that everyone is passing and getting good grades, which means they are doing something right.

I had the idea in mind but it was hard to structure and put into words.  My phone always distracts me when I do homework or study so it is hard for me to put away my phone.  Even when I wrote this post it was difficult not to just look at my phone to see if I received a text.  I believe at first everything is kind of difficult to me because I get distracted very easily even when I don’t have anything or anyone around me.  It is hard for me to focus at a task at hand and I start to think of other things that I have to do or want to do.  But when I start getting into the assignment, it just flows but all the time that I spent fidgeting was just a waste.

Hi

Hi, my name is Israel but my friends call me Izzy.  I transferred here from Florida and this is my second semester at Baruch.  I am seeking a degree in Bus. Mgt. and I also work full-time at Yankee Stadium HRC.

My two favorite things in the world to do are travel and go out to eat.  I love thai, sushi, and Italian food.  I am Puerto Rican so I don’t count Spanish food in that category because it’s usually a given.  Some of my other hobbies are hanging out with friends, going to the movies, listening to R&B, dancing salsa, and just having a good time.

I moved here about 2 years ago by myself and I really haven’t made any friends.  I am a workaholic so I go to school 5 days a week and work 6 days.  But every so often I made time for myself even if it’s a short period.  I always say, “life is too short, so live it to the fullest.”  I am very outgoing and spontaneous and love to try new things.  I feel like I am writing too much so on that note, till next time!!!

"1. After reading the reflection writer’s description, what do you think was happening to them during the meditation on a physiological level?
I believe that Amanda, being that she never meditated before was going out of her norm, so that’s why she might have been feeling a little awkward. But then she started to control her thoughts and was able to stabilize her mind from thinking so much of the problems but more of the body and breathing. She relaxed herself so much that the tension went away and put her to sleep. 2. Based on your readings throughout the semester, what areas of their central and peripheral nervous systems may have been effected during the meditation?
The brain and the spinal cord was affected and the somatic nervous system transmitted sensory information to the brain and spinal cord in able to have the brain bring it back to the spinal cord to relax the skeletal muscles. The ANS helped with the relaxation and bringing the body to a less active/restful state. It also slowed down the heard rate so Amanda was able to be so relaxed and fall asleep 3. What questions do you have for the writer about their experience?
How long did it take you to completely relax? How far in the meditation did you fall sleep at? Do you think that you fell asleep so easily because you’ve been lacking sleep and haven’t had time to catch up on it? 4. Based on the description provided, would you be open to trying the same meditation exercise? I wouldn’t mind trying it out. I read that mediation helps with attention and I do need to focus a little more"

"I think it is a good idea to have those memories about your mistakes so you don’t have to make the same mistake twice. I don’t agree with your memorable memories in terms of them all being good and happy because how would you be able to know what is good or not. Sometimes we have to go through the bad to get to the good. If you didn’t remember I would understand but it will sort of hurt inside because I will think about all the times we had and how you wouldn’t be able to relate and reminisce with me about them. I would be there to show pictures, place, and give stories on how everything was. I would basically update her on what has happened up to date. I would use effortful processing for the encoding part. I think I would incorporate a little of cramming and some sleep on it as come consolidation just to get the brain working and trying to warm up to the memories that she’s going to start remembering. And then for the retrieval we would use explicit memories since it require conscious effort for retrieval."

"Hi Valentina, That's a beautiful picture. I love traveling and can't wait to travel the rest of the world as well. My name is Israel and I am a business major. I was going to join a club this semester but work was too hectic also. I promised myself that I will do it next time for sure. Have you heard of any good clubs to join? What kind of dancing do you like to do?"
