Handwriting Notes VS Typing Notes

I am interested in conducting a research on how different ways college students taking notes, by hand or by typing, will affect their memory of the lectures. My hypothesis is that taking notes by hand will have a much better effect on students’ memory of the lecture and therefore, they have more chance to perform better in the exam. The variables in this experiment are obviously taking note by hand and by typing into computers. If my hypothesis is proved correct, this study will provide students a better way to study and take note in class.

An Experimental design will best suit my topic since we are sure that students can get a better grade by taking good notes for review. What I want to know here, is what kind of note taking method will perform better in improving our grades. I would use a lab experiment. My independent variables are the two ways of taking note, by hand or by typing. And my dependent variable will be the memory level of a lecture. In a group of 30 college students, I would randomly assign them into two groups. One of them will be asked to keep notes with a pen and paper for a lecture and the other group will be asked to keep notes by typing into computers for the same lecture at the same time. After the class, I would provide a pop quiz, which is not notified to them before. The pop quiz tests the key points that are mentioned in the lecture in order for me to compare the average grades of the two groups.

The biggest challenge I faced during the process of designing this experiment is to find the psychological experiment idea. As college students, our biggest problem is to find a way to help up study efficiently. That is when I come up with this idea of note taking techniques. Once I decided my topic, the rest of the design is actually less difficult than I expected. In short, I answered the list of questions that were required in the post and arranged them when I wrote the post. During this process, I reread Chapter Two about the concepts of various research methods to find the one that fits the best in my experiment. It is also necessary to know the two characteristics of conducting an experimental study.

Hey there!

Hello everyone!!!!

My name is Jingan Hu. I know it is a hard name to pronounce, so just call me Joanne if you want. As you probably can tell by my name, I am Chinese and I was born in Shanghai, China. Actually, I came to the United States a little bit more than two years ago. This is my first semester at Baruch as a transfer student. I transferred from LaGuardia Community College. Since this is the first semester, my transfer evaluation has not yet been completed. Thus, I suppose I am still a freshman at the point. Although Accounting is my intended major, I am always interested in the field of psychology. I think it is just amazing how differently people would react to the same situation. I really enjoy talking to different people with different backgrounds just to see the difference. Math might be my favorite subject so far. (I guess you guys are probably thinking, What a surprise to know a Chinese who likes math! :))  In this semester, I made a super intense schedule; therefore, I do not have any time joining any clubs now, but I surely want to attend one later on.

Aside from works in school, I really love photography. However, I am just an amateur. Here is a photo that I took when I was in Shanghai. Please, do not make fun of my rookie camera technique. 😛

All right! Let’s keep up the good work in Psychology! Fighting!

"1. After reading the reflection writer’s description, what do you think was happening to them during the meditation on a physiological level? Although at the beginning of the writer's meditation, he could not help thinking about other stuff in his life, on a physiological level, he actually started loosening his muscles later on when he became more and more involve in his meditation. The loosening of his muscles help to release the feeling of a burden on his shoulder. 2. Based on your readings throughout the semester, what areas of their central and peripheral nervous systems may have been effected during the meditation? According to the writer's description, he was getting more and more relaxed during his meditaiton exercise. Therefore, as we learned in class, the Parasympathetic Nervous System in Peripheral nervous system was activated. The level of epinephrine and norepinephrine in the Sympathetic Nervous System would decrease. There was an increase level of serotonin, which released the writer's anxiety. 3. What questions do you have for the writer about their experience? When you were doing meditation in the library, how could you keep yourself from the distructions you had at the beginning? 4. Based on the description provided, would you be open to trying the same meditation exercise? Of course I want to try the same meditation exercise. It seems to me that meditation really relax the anxiety of the writer. Also, as we learned in class, meditation exercises can also help people to increse their ability to pay attention, which I think is the exact exercise I need."

"The author is basically saying that he wanted to retrieve his happy memories and discard some negative memories such as a fight with his friend. However, in my opinion, in order to fully understand what kind of person he was before he lost his memory and the lessons he had learned from his past experience, it is best to keep as much memories as he can. As the author says in his post, he learned his mistake. If he forget this memory of fighting with his friend, it is possible he can fight with his friends again. Suppose he is one of my longtime friends, the fact that he lost every memory of his life before the accident certainly would make me sad and feel sorry for him because he no longer has our shared memories together, whether it is positive or negative. On the other hand, I would also realize that it is important for me to be there with him as a support even if at first he would treat me as a complete stranger. I believe that is what friends are supposed to do. As we learned in psychology class, some memories are stored in our mind even without our consciousness. That is probably how meditation will work to treat memory loss. One way I would help my friend to retrieve his memory is to take him to some places that we once shared strong emotional memories together, such as a party both of us had a great time together. I suppose that by recreating the exact same scene and reliving it together, it would trigger the memory of my friend and hopefully, brings it to his consciousness."

"Hi Abhinaya, Thank you for your post on my blog again. It is really nice of you. I am glad to know you came to the country around the same time as me. I envy you can speak four languages! I always want to learn French, but am too lazy to do so. :)"
