Meditation Reflection

I. For this reflection, we ask you to find a way to meditate. To do so, you have two options:

I choose “Guided Meditation” by Mark Abramson to do with the meditation.

II. Before you begin your meditation, we ask you assess and take notes on your own state of mind during the 24 hour period leading up to the meditation.

A. First, take note of the moods you’ve experienced.

I am really stressed and anxious because I have so many midterm exams recently. Furthermore, I start to apply for my master degree and I have to prepare the GMAT. Therefore, I feel extremely exhausted.

B. Assess your overall level of anxiety on a scale of 1 to 10.

I think my overall level of anxiety is 6.

C. Assess the level of physical tension in your body- where do you notice the tension? Try rating your overall tension on a scale of 1 to 10.

I think the level of physical tension in my body is 6. My tension would be much nightmare. It’s hard for me to be asleep and I have a lot of nightmare everynight.

III. After you have finished your meditation, re-asses your state of mind and body.
A. Reassess your mood on the chart.

After I finished the meditation, I feel better than before and I have less stress and anxiety.
B. Reassess your level of anxiety from 1 to 10.

Now my level of anxiety is 2.
C. Reasses your level of physical tension and rate it from 1 to 10.

My level of physical tension is 2. Also, it’s much easier for me to be asleep. I can have a sweet dream after I completed the meditation.

IV. Describe the experience– What type of meditation did you choose? Describe what was going on in your mind and your body, what kind of thoughts and sensations did you experience during the meditation? Were there any challenging or frustrating aspects of the experience, and if so, what were they? Would you try this again in the future? Why or why not?

I choose the “Guided Meditation” by Mark Abramson. At first, it’s hard for me to blank my brain, even though I followed the instruction which Mark Abramson taught me. I tried to focus on it slowly. After around 10 minutes, I blanked my brain and followed Mark Abramson’s instruction. I felt relaxed and comfortable. I started to enjoy the process. It helped me to decrease my stress and I feel much better during the meditation. I thought it’s a good way to relax myself. And I would try this again in the future, when I met some troubles in school or in work. It did help me to be out of exhaustion. Moreover, I will introduce the meditation to my friends and my family. It’s a good experience.

Helloooooooo!!!

Hello, everyone! This is Jing Qi! You can call me Sabrina!I came from Shanghai, and this is my second year in U.S now. I’m a transfer student and I’m sorphemore now. My major is accounting and my favorite class is accounting. Most of people thought it was boring, but I like it.I want to be an auditor and work in one of the big four after the graduation. Although I’m a Chinese, I love Korean songs so much. The usual process before I sleep was that I checked my YouTube account to find whether there are new Korean music videos upload today. I’m so glad to take the same class with you. Hope all of you have a nice weekend!

"Imagine you are a longtime friend of the person who wrote one of the reflection pieces, and consider these issues for your own comment. 1. What is your reaction to the choices made by the author of this Reflection in terms of which memories they chose to keep and which memories they are discarding. It's so sad that the author forgot everything, except that she remembered she was struck by a falling object. She forgot her mom and dad, her home and her friends. I really understand how confused she is when she waked up in the hospital. 2. How would you feel if this friend did not remember you (imagining that you are their longtime friend)? I would be upset when my longtime friend didn't remember me. I would be depressed when I met her. She looked at me like a stranger. It would be a little bit wierd. I would have no idea to say anything to my friend. Although I talked about our pleasant traveling to someplace together, she would have no response. It would be very sad. 3. What role might you play in helping them reconstruct their memory? As my longtime friend, I would bring her to my home and show her the photos and videos we took together. Second, I would bring her to meet our friends and would chat about our past experiences together. Third, I would bring her to the hospital to have the professional therapy. 4. Based on what you’ve learned in class and through your readings, what memory encoding, consolidation, and retrieval techniques might you use or teach to help this person recover and reintegrate their memories? Firstly,I would help her encoding. I would tell her all the most important moment that we have together and repeat it many times. Then, I will help her in consolidation. I will show her several times the video and photos that we took together untill she might be able to remember something. Finally, she would get retrieval. She would be able to catch some moment in the past time."

"It's a interesting topic. I agree with you that students who eat breakfast every morning will perform better on the test than students who do not eat. First, from my experience, it is ture. If I don't eat breakfast in the morning, my brain would be locked. And I can't think about anything, of course, I can't attend an exam. Second, students would lose energy to take a test, if they do not eat breakfast. Thus, I think that students who eat breakfast every morning will perform better on the test than students who do not eat."

"I think this is a good idea for experiment, and this experiment is easy to design. However, as you said, there are many confounding variables that affect grades on tests in this experiment. It would lead to an inaccurate result of this experiment. Furthermore, I don't think the students who sleep over 10 hours would get a lower grade than those who sleep between 6-10 hours, because we couldn't make sure that students who sleep between 6-10 hours spend most of their time on studying or on playing."
