My Experience of Meditation

I. I chose a meditation of Guided body scan by Gil Fronsdal.

A. First, take note of the moods you’ve experienced.

I had a long and stressful day. I woke up with a loud music from next door in the morning. I had been working on project for another class. Then I went to work. After work, I usually take F train, but it was not woking, so I had to walk to take another train to come back home. I was exhausted and under stress.

B. Assess your overall level of anxiety on a scale of 1 to 10.

I would say my level of anxiety was 8.

C. Assess the level of physical tension in your body- where do you notice the tension? Try rating your overall tension on a scale of 1 to 10.

The level of physical tension in my body was 9. I felt physical tension around the shoulders, especially.

III. After you have finished your meditation, re-asses your state of mind and body.
A. Reassess your mood on the chart.

I feel more calm, relaxed and less under stress.

B. Reassess your level of anxiety from 1 to 10.

My anxiety level is 3.

C. Reasses your level of physical tension and rate it from 1 to 10.

My physical tension level is 4.

IV. Describe the experience– What type of meditation did you choose? Describe what was going on in your mind and your body, what kind of thoughts and sensations did you experience during the meditation? Were there any challenging or frustrating aspects of the experience, and if so, what were they? Would you try this again in the future? Why or why not?

I chose a meditation of Guided body scan by Gil Fronsdal. When I started meditation, I was still thinking about work and school project. At first, it was difficult to let the thought out from my mind. but as I followed the guidance, I didn’t think about those things much at the end. Another challenge was focusing the sensation of the body. Maybe because it was the first time to do a meditation. When I focused on breathing, I realize that my breathing was short and fast. At the end, my breathing was slower and deeper. After finishing the meditation, my mind was clear and feel more relaxed. I still feel physical tension, but it’s much better than before. I will try the meditation again because it released my tension and stress. I feel it!

Hello!

Hello Everyone,

My name is Junko. I’m from Japan. I graduated from LaGuardia Community College and transferred to Baruch. This is my second semester. My major is marketing. I took Eng2850, Mgt3121, Acc2203 and Fin3000 so far and am taking Mkt3600, Mkt3650, Soc3085 and Psy1001. Is anyone taking the same courses in this semester except this class??? I like the professors in our class and am enjoying this class so far.

I like reading books(except text books:P), playing tennis, sking(because I’m from countryside in Japan and there are many mountains in my prefecture), snow boarding, scuba diving(even though there is no ocean in my prefecture, I have PADI advanced licence), and I also love creating stuff such as candles, jewelry, and so on.(even though there is no enough time to enjoy my hobbies because I come to school in the daytime and work at night) My favorate novelist is Haruki Murakami! If you want to learn who he is and his works, visit the website http://www.randomhouse.com/features/murakami/site.php

"1. What is your reaction to the choices made by the author of this Reflection in terms of which memories they chose to keep and which memories they are discarding? I totally agree with the author. I want to remember both good and gad memories because each small piece of memories constructed me who I am today. As the author mentioned, many people want to forget about bad experiences such as a death of someone close to them, witnessing something terrifying as a childhood or painful events, but we can learn something from those bad experiences. learning from those bad experiences will be helpful to prevent the similar event from occurring. If there is a person who remember only good experiences but any bad experience, Im little scared of the person because it is not normal. 2. How would you feel if this friend did not remember you (imagining that you are their longtime friend)? If my friend did not remember me, I will be really sad and cry. As the author said that I am just a stranger for her now. It is unbearable and unimaginable. 3. What role might you play in helping them reconstruct their memory? I will play very important role to reconstruct her memory. I would go to memorable places we used to go together such as schools and restaurants. I would also try to do the same or similar events which occured in her life. Hope it will be a trigger to reconstruct her memory. 4. Based on what you’ve learned in class and through your readings, what memory encoding, consolidation, and retrieval techniques might you use or teach to help this person recover and reintegrate their memories? I will try to help her to retrieve her explicit memory by using episodic memory. I will tell her memorable events which happened between us with using some memorable objects. For example, listening a song we listened at graduation and tell her what happened on that event."

"I'm intrested in the study. I agree with Farzana's hypothesis of the study’s outcome that students who sleep more do better in the class. You can also use survey to research the study. I don't think case study, naturalistic observation and lab experiment are necessary. I don't think there are any drawbacks or potential harmful impacts of this research design or results. The results could help some students to manage their sleeping time for better grades. As I said, I agree with the hypothesis, but I guess too much sleep could have negative effect on school performance. So divide students into some groups such as students who sleep less than 5, 6-8, more than 9 are easier to measure the dependent variable."
