Research: Sugar and Tests

When I was younger, before a test, my mother would always tell me to have a piece of chocolate to calm my nerves. Throughout the years, a few of my teachers have shown curiosity about whether the intake of sugar before a test has any correlation with how well a student performs on a test.

The type of design that would best suit my research question is a correlational study, in which I would use naturalistic observation on a class of students.

A teacher, whose class is about to take a test, offers the students a bar of chocolate that they’re only allowed to eat before the test starts, if at all. I’d jot down which students ate the chocolate.

Throughout the exam, I’d look for signs of energy or tiredness (normal affects of sugar) on students who ate the candy. I’d also observe the students who did not eat the candy, to have something to compare the first group to.

I’d think that the group that ate the candy before the test will do better on the first part of the test than on the second part of the test, but I don’t think there would be a huge difference between the test grades of the group that ate the candy and the group that didn’t.

If, from this naturalistic observation study, I come to find that sugar might be related to how well students do – meaning, the results of the grades of the students who didn’t eat the candy and the students who did vary greatly, I might do an experiment to research further. Said experiment would have a great effect on sugar intake, because if parents know that sugar has a positive/negative effect on their children’s test grades, they’d be more likely to give/not give their children sugar before a test.

Hello there!

Hello, my fellow classmates. My name is Kelland Huang. I’m currently a junior, majoring in finance and minoring in English. I grew up in Brooklyn, NY. As a child, I spent most of the time at my local public park or at home, with my grandma. Nowadays, when I’m not working, interning or schooling, I enjoy dancing, taking walks and cooking.
I’ve always felt a bit different from everyone else, but as we learned in class, we’re allĀ different from everyone else.
I’m very big on respect, patience and.. life in general.

"Hi Svetlana, Nice to meet you too! Finance is going alright so far. I like this major, because it's very broad and full of opportunities. I do find it a bit difficult -- but if you 're really considering finance for a major, it shouldn't be a problem. Presentations are a given, but nothing outrageous. Like most other business classes, one at the end of the semester. Public speaking is something you'll have to do if you're planning on going into business. Efficient, effective communication is a must. Take it one step at a time; you'll get there just fine. :) Kelland"

"I'd do the same thing, especially if you're close with your family and go on Facebook for many hours a day like I do. I also like that you'd want to recover most of your memory. A lot of people I know would choose to not remember the bad but experiences, good and bad, make us who we are. If you don't remember me.. I'd be sad, but I'd understand. I'd definitely try to help you remember. If that doesn't work, we can always make new memories. I'm very big on inside jokes and randomness. I'd tell you how you used to react to what things. I'd remind you of the things you used to like to do, but doing them with you. 4. Encoding: I'd show you funny clips you used to like, refresh your memory on Facebook, listen to your favorite songs, eat your favorite foods and hang out "like we used to." Consolidation: I'd repeat the aforementioned for a while. Retrieval: Maybe you'd remember how good your favorite dish tasted or how fun volleyball was. :)"

"Hi, Roalt! It's awesome that you make time for handball and writing. I used to do both, but I haven't really had the chance since college started.. boo. I'm relatively easily un-calmed, so nature walks are great. As for campus life, I used to feel that way as well. For a commuter school, Baruch actually offers a lot. I used to think, "Wow, no one wants to meet people here. Everyone's just minding his/her own business. This school does a pretty bad job at involving its students." ... but it takes two to tango. When you explore a little, you'll be surprised at how much actually goes on at Baruch. I love English classes here! If you're into poetry and haven't taken Shipley yet, he's an absolute must. Lovely post; thanks for sharing! :)"
