Meditation Results

A. First, take note of the moods you’ve experienced.

I would say I’m quite anxious today because of a swim meet I’m participating in tomorrow.

B. Assess your overall level of anxiety on a scale of 1 to 10.

Not too anxious, about a 5 or so.

C. Assess the level of physical tension in your body- where do you notice the tension? Try rating your overall tension on a scale of 1 to 10.

My back that’s about a 9. And just in general is about a 6.

III. After you have finished your meditation, re-asses your state of mind and body.
A. Reassess your mood on the chart.

I am happy and confident.

B. Reassess your level of anxiety from 1 to 10.

My level of anxiety is close to none. I’d say a 1.
C. Reasses your level of physical tension and rate it from 1 to 10.

My physical tension is about a 3.

IV. Describe the experience– What type of meditation did you choose? Describe what was going on in your mind and your body, what kind of thoughts and sensations did you experience during the meditation? Were there any challenging or frustrating aspects of the experience, and if so, what were they? Would you try this again in the future? Why or why not?

I chose a guided meditation by “Gil Fronsdal” on Confidence and the Breath. I was thinking about confidence on what I was going to do this week. In the beginning I was trying to focus on confidence in the past, the future, and the foundations of confidence. I focused on my breathing, I was trying not to think. It was frustrating how I kept on letting myself down, thoughts kept on popping into my brain about the events of my day. After a few minutes, I started to enjoy the meditation. The instructor really helped me orient myself so that I would have my breath to focus on, and to focus on the present. My muscles started to relax and it was just a wonderful feeling. It helped to orient myself and my thoughts. I would definitely try this again in the future but a different type of meditation. I took a yoga class before where we focused on the colors of our auras, and it was very interesting. Certain colors of our auras represented different thoughts in our mind. Overall, this was an enjoyable experience.

Hello Class :)

Hello! I’m Kristi Zhang and I’m 19 years old.  I just recently transferred into Baruch from Brooklyn College and before that, from Fordham University. I’m loving Baruch, especially psychology. I’m not planning on majoring in Psychology but I do plan on majoring in Accounting and then continuing onto law school. I’ve recently joined the swim team here, and I’m excited for an amazing season. I was born and raised in Brooklyn but I’m always excited to go traveling. One day, I’d like to visit all 5o states, so far I’ve been to 23 and counting…  🙂

I love to try new things, and this summer I recently learned how to windsurf! My current favorite song is “All My Loving” by Across the Universe. I’m currently reading “Fast Food Nation” by Eric Schlosser, and my first impression of this book was, “Why in the world would someone read this book?” but after flipping through a few pages, and then going on to reading half the book, it’s influenced me to eat healthy and to be more mindful about food production and surprising truths about what we’re eating.

I hope to have an amazing semester with you this year!

"1. What is your reaction to the choices made by the author of this Reflection in terms of which memories they chose to keep and which memories they are discarding. I think that JiaYing's choice to keep all of her happiest moments as well as "correcting her mistakes" is a wise choice. Yet, my reaction is that a person does not truly know happiness until they've experienced what sadness is. If their memories of their past was all happiness, and while living throughout the rest of their lives, they have disappointments--then life would not be living up to their expectations of the level of happiness, and that could cause a lot of complications, such as the person wanting to commit suicide or just being a depressed person overall. As for changing/discarding the mistakes she has made in the past, that ideally sounds great, however I am an adamant believer that people make mistakes to learn from them. If she got rid of all of her "mistakes" then she would not know to not do them again, and in her future she may run into the same problems. I'd say that a person's personality doesn't change even though she has suffered through retrograde amnesia. 2. How would you feel if this friend did not remember you (imagining that you are their longtime friend)? I would be very upset, however I wouldn't give up hope that perhaps one day she'd remember me again. The past definitely has a lot of significance to our friendship but it doesn't mean that we can't still be friends or make new memories. For example, if my best/close friend loved chocolate-dipped strawberries, I'm sure that even after suffering amnesia, they'd still like the same foods. We could take it one step at a time. 3. What role might you play in helping them reconstruct their memory? I would try and jolt their memories, by bringing them to places that we've been before. I'd try not to be frustrated as it could be a challenging process to retrieve their memories again. 4. Based on what you’ve learned in class and through your readings, what memory encoding, consolidation, and retrieval techniques might you use or teach to help this person recover and reintegrate their memories? I could try to use smells and different tactics in order to jolt their memories, such as "consolidation". We could try to re-enact different events that happened, or I could go through facebook and show her pictures, which is an example of "encoding"."

"I disagree that it can be beneficial to buy a monthly class every month for everyone. If someone has 3 classes a week, and just comes in 3 times a week then they would just need 6 rides, which is 24 rides in a month. A monthly pass is about 105 dollars. Which means that each ride is about 4 dollars. However, if you were to buy an unlimited metro-card and used it about 12 times a week, that would definitely save you money. That's like using the card 48 times a month, which means its about $2.18 a ride. which saves you about 7 cents. I don't know how much that really does save you, but I would say that psychologically I would assume unlimited metro-cards are bought more often because of its convenience as well. This is an interesting study."

"I agree that personal notes are better than ppt slides. That would be a interesting experiment because I'm sure there are students who don't take personal notes and still do well on exams. I suppose variables are whether the student understands the lecture or not. If you just write notes of your own, but you don't understand the material, I could see that as being a challenge to study. Great study!"

"Hello! I agree with you a lot about the quiz and the results. I think people are very likely to just speed through questions in order to get it over with you."
