Do You Fall Asleep More Easily If You Listen To Music As You’re Falling Asleep

So I’ve heard many people say things like, “I always fall asleep listening to my ipod,” or “I can’t fall asleep without listening to music.”  Therefore my question is, “Does it really help people fall asleep better/faster or does it actually put them into a more tranquil mood/state of mind which allows people to fall asleep more easily?”

I’m sort of having a hard time which category this “experiment” would fall into, I don’t know whether it would be experimental or correlational because my idea is two take two groups of 10 from lets say this psych class and bring them into a lab setting set up with a bed and night time lighting in which the experimental group would have their ipod and would attempt to fall asleep as they normally would, while the control group would simply lie down with no ipod and fall asleep on their own.  From the moment each person would lie down I would starting recording how long it takes for them to actually fall asleep, and once they have I’d record the amount of time it takes for them to fall asleep.  Here the independent variable would be the ipod and minutes it takes to fall asleep would be dependent on whether or not they have the ipod so that would make it the dependent variable.  My reason as to why I think it may be a correlational study is because this study is finding trying to find whether there is a correlation between listening to music and falling asleep faster.

My hypothesis would be that the group with no ipods would fall asleep faster, I have several reasons for my hypothesis: 1) because most music will stimulate your brain and get you into the music to the point where you become awake and excited because of the beat for example, and 2) because everyone knows that when they are listening to their ipod on shuffle, you always end up skipping and skipping songs so that definitely would disturb the process of trying to fall asleep.

As far as who would gain from it probably everyone who makes it a habit of listening to music before going to sleep.  However no matter what the results are people, may continue this habit simply because they have become accustomed to it.

Something that may affect the outcome of this experiment would be a confounding variable.  Certain types of music even if it’s upbeat may actually prove to tranquilize and put someone at ease simply because they may listen to that music so often.  If this is the case, then someone listening to music may fall asleep at the same time as someone who is in the control group (the group with no ipods).

So I think thats about it, I’d definitely like feedback on this especially because I want to figure out what group this would fall in correlational vs. experimental.

Hi Guys !

Hi guys, so my name is Lysandra Dillon.  I was born in Colombia and was raised and is still living in the Bronx.  I plan on majoring in human resource management and minoring in law hoping to eventually do H.R. in an entertainment, music, or sport industry.  As far as hobbies I love sports and music is my life.  I’ve played both basketball and softball since the fourth grade and I definitely miss it considering I don’t play for Baruch.  The reason I don’t is because I just decided to dedicate my time to school work, finding a job and/or internship.  Every now and then though I’ll play basketball with a few friends at a park by my house.  As far as music, I love HipHop, R&B, Rap, Reggaeton, Bachata, Salsa, oh and I LOVE to dance.  Whenever I’m down I listen to music and sometimes dance alone like a loser in my room and I feel much better; I really think music is my cure to everything, or at least most things.  As far as my favorite class- it’s definitely psych.  Right now I’m trying to get more involved in SHRM because they have great opportunities that are definitely helpful to those majoring in HR.  And lastly, I think we have to share something from the web or something that describes us so I guess I’ll just put the link to one of my favorite songs right now which is: Next To You by Chris Brown and Justin Beiber http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EEuQU6a90Pc

"1. After reading the reflection writer’s description, what do you think was happening to them during the meditation on a physiological level? It seems that frustration and feelings of tensity were dominant going into the meditation and that your body felt heavy with burden but once you continued with the meditation you stimulated brain activity and eventually it may have seemed like a weight was lifted off your shoulders 2. Based on your readings throughout the semester, what areas of their central and peripheral nervous systems may have been effected during the meditation? As you meditate your breathing is regulated as well as your heart rate. The area of the brain related to this is the medulla. Emotions such as anxiety, stress, and fear are related to areas such as the hippocampus and amygdala so those areas were affected since all of those negative emotions should be released in some way as you meditate. 3. What questions do you have for the writer about their experience? Did you find that you had trouble focusing on the meditation? Were you easily distracted? Also, when do you think the best time to meditate would be? The morning? During the day? Before you go to sleep? 4. Based on the description provided, would you be open to trying the same meditation exercise? I definitely would try this and other meditation exercises because it seems like it really helps relieve stress and anxiety and since I find myself feeling very stressed with school and other things in my life, this would be an efficient method for me to try."

"1. After reading the reflection writer’s description, what do you think was happening to them during the meditation on a physiological level? On a physiological level it seems you started off with your body feeling very tense from the stress however as time progressed during the meditation that tensity probably started to lessen, brain activity was stimulated, and a sense of euphoria may have been possible to feel. 2. Based on your readings throughout the semester, what areas of their central and peripheral nervous systems may have been effected during the meditation? The medulla which regulates heart rate and breathing was certainly affected during the meditation. Emotions such as anxiety, stress, and fear are related to areas such as the hippocampus and amygdala so those areas were affected since all of those negative emotions should be released in some way as you meditate or alter your state of awareness. 3. What questions do you have for the writer about their experience? Were you able to completely focus or did you find yourself getting distracted at all? Also, would you be willing to try other techniques of meditation or would you stick to the method similar to the one you just did. 4. Based on the description provided, would you be open to trying the same meditation exercise? I would definitely be willing to try this meditation exercise because I find myself under a lot of stress and would feel that by clearing my mind once or twice a week it would do a lot of good"

"I definitely agree with your reason of keeping memories of both happiness and sadness. Considering the fact that you don't remember anything from before the accident this would mean you don't remember how you felt in both times of happiness and sadness and I believe in life you have to understand how it feels to experience both extremes- happiness and pain. If you have experienced any real sadness or pain in your life, it makes it a bit easier to appreciate and cherish times of joy. If I were your long time friend and you did not remember me it would be pretty painful considering all of the times and memories we've probably made together but I would certainly stick by you and help you out through the tough times you would be going through. I'd help you and try to fill in the blanks of your past by bringing you to places we've hung out at and maybe eating our favorite foods considering the senses of smell and taste can be very strong and might spark some small memory or recollection. I would also talk to you about times where you were expressing how very happy you were about something; strong emotions of happiness- even sadness- can help one remember things because of the strong connection between memory and emotions"

"I definitely agree with your choice to remember those memorable times when you may have learned from a mistake. I believe life will take you through a lot of rough times and there are even times where you might make the wrong decision and learning from those mistakes are crucial. You can never regret making a mistake you should only regret that mistake when you realize you haven't learned from it. So being able to pick those memories where you had realized you had made a mistake and chose to learn and grow from it would be a wise choice. If I were your long time friend it would definitely be hard considering you probably would have forgotten all the fun times we've had together but I would stand by your side as always and help you reach out to the people that you can trust and help you with whatever you might need. To help you remember things I would hang out with you at previous locations we've been together and see if anything sparks any memory, whether it be through food at a restaurant or an amusement park. I would also bring up the times where you may have reached out to me if you were ever going through rough times. For example, a break-up with a boyfriend that you were in love with may have been a very tough time, and that recollection may bring back strong feelings of sadness, and as we know emotions and memory are very closely linked so this may help in the process of remembering bits and pieces of your life."
