Memory Reflection

1. How would you begin the process of recovering your memory? Who would you turn to, where would you search, and how would you proceed?

Retrograde amnesia would be a huge problem for me as I have certain facts and events from the past that I cherish and some that are painful from a perspective. Even though some of these memories might be hard to accept, they are essential to our well being and survival, and it is what makes us unique. The initial step that I would take to recover my memories is to have a simple conversation with my family and ask them certain questions such as,

– Who are my closest/best friends and how do I contact them?

– Do we have a photo album that I can look at?

– What were some of my favorite activities?

Finding out who your best friends are– is essential since a good portion of your time is spent by hanging out and building a connection with someone outside of your family. They can reintroduce you to some of the happy moments, embarrassing, and sad moments.  This is also a good chance to reestablish connections with friends whom one might have not seen a quite a while. The second question refers to a photo album and it is critical as it will give me clues as to who I am and where I was at that moment in time. It is will enable me to gain my existence little by little simply by traveling. Remember that a photo is taken to hold that specific time in place so that you may return to it when you forget who you are. Lastly, being introduced to ones favorite activities/hobbies from the past can serve as a mnemonic device, which in turn will help me remember certain memories through repetition.

2. Please describe the emotional journey you imagine you would be going through as you attempt to reconstruct your life. Imagine the feelings you would have.

I believe that the emotional journey I’ll be going through will not only be sad at times but their will also be some happy/funny moments. For example, an experience that may provoke sadness is the realization that someone that you love has already passed away. Actually, most of the sorrowful experiences during this journey is the realization that something/someone that you love is just not there anymore. An example of a happy/funny moment might be a great mistake that you once made, a misunderstanding that you once frowned upon at that time but of which is not all that serious anymore. Overall, this journey will be harsh, emotionally, but it will also make me a greater person than I once was.

3. Suppose you were able to pick and choose the memories you wanted to recover from your life. What types of memories would you choose to retain and what types of memories might you decide to edit out of your remembered experience? Positive, negative, painful, happy, angry, frightened, etc. Please elaborate and explain some your decision making process.

I wouldn’t edit out any of my past experiences because that is like taking away a piece of who you really are as an individual. Having all the elements in place is what makes us perfect, regardless of whether or not some of the flaws within our memories. Darn, I was going to write some more stuff but I don’t remember… wait.. where am I? Who are you people?

Hello everyone

Hello classmates! My name is Louis Lee and this is my first semester at Baruch as a transfer student and I’m planning on majoring in Marketing or Accounting, still undecided at the moment. Prior to coming to Baruch College, I attended Queensborough Community College as a Business Administration major, and I also worked at QCC as a College Assistant. And before attending QCC, I actually went to Vancouver Film School and enrolled as a 3D Artist in order to fulfill my childhood dream. Unfortunately, the 3D industry is very weak at the moment and although I got into a few internships, I began to realize that this route wasn’t the best choice for me at that time.

To tell you a little bit more about myself, I was born in New York so you can consider me as an American but my nationality is Korean. I’ve spent almost my entire life in New York and also lived in Vancouver, Canada for 2 years, which was awesome! If you ever get the chance I would highly recommend going to Vancouver for a short vacation (or even long-term). My hobbies are made up of a few things, I like to snowboard during the winter, camping, fishing, or hiking during the summer, and do some 3D freelancing on the side if I do get some time.

As for my intended route at Baruch, I’m not planning on majoring in Psychology but I’ve always wanted to take this class because it’s always interesting to learn not only of humanistic qualities but also of myself as an individual. Since I’m a fairly new student at Baruch I don’t have any favorite classes thus far but something will surely stand out on its own. Lastly, I haven’t joined any student organizations/club but I will join one asap as I’ve done at QCC.

Thanks and good luck to everyone,

Louis Lee

"1. After reading the reflection writer’s description, what do you think was happening to them during the meditation on a physiological level? Courtney found meditation a bit distracting due to Brasington's voice but soon found it relaxing after focusing more on the breathing aspect within the meditation. Overall I would say that she has found serenity and seems healthy. 2. Based on your readings throughout the semester, what areas of their central and peripheral nervous systems may have been effected during the meditation? In the CNS, I would say that the spinal cord was affected due to the problems with her back, and also the hypothalamus played a major role in helping her relax during the meditation. As for the PNS, I would say that the motor and sensory nerves improved greatly for Courtney after the meditation. 3. What questions do you have for the writer about their experience? What do you think is the most effective way to meditate? 4. Based on the description provided, would you be open to trying the same meditation exercise? Yes, I would definitely try the same exercise to see the benefits for myself and to help improve my health overall."

"1. After reading the reflection writer’s description, what do you think was happening to them during the meditation on a physiological level? Bryan seemed relaxed during the meditation and in a healthy state overall. 2. Based on your readings throughout the semester, what areas of their central and peripheral nervous systems may have been effected during the meditation? I believe that the frontal lobe and the brain stem in the CNS was mostly affected for Bryan during the meditation. As for the PNS, I think that the pituitary gland played a major roll in helping Bryan to relax and to get the full experience of meditation. 3. What questions do you have for the writer about their experience? Other than yoga, what do you think is a good alternative for meditation? 4. Based on the description provided, would you be open to trying the same meditation exercise? Yes, lately I have been stressed due to exams and family, thus I think meditation would be the best choice right now."

"What would be your hypothesis of the study’s outcome? My hypothesis can be summed up with one word, moderation. Gaming is like any other addiction, if you play too much than you may arrive at lower grades, and if you play just enough than it may be beneficial to some extent. What suggestions do you have for the researcher on how to improve or adjust the proposed study? Honestly, I think that you need to narrow down the details for your research because it seems too generic. Like Victor as suggested, you should outline what type of games you will be using for the test as each game might have different effects. As an example, a gamer who plays more strategic games might do better on exams compared to gamers who play first person shooter games. Are there any drawbacks or potential harmful impacts of this research design (or results?) Using surveys might skew the data by a large amount, I would suggest using a more direct method in a physical setting. What would be the NEXT STEP after this hypothetical research study were conducted and presented to the public? Can you propose a replication with a good twist? That’s often how research works and how the field is able to advance. Maybe you can think up a great Follow Up study! It would be more interesting to see how students who play strategic/puzzle games fair against students who play adventure/fps games when it comes to college exams."

"What would be your hypothesis of the study’s outcome? Based on my own experience and the experiences of others, I believe that students who exercise on a daily basis has better mental performance, and thus they perform better on exams and also being attentive during class sessions. What suggestions do you have for the researcher on how to improve or adjust the proposed study? The only suggestion that I have is to have "time" as the independent variable and to have "exam scores/performance" as the dependent variable. Note that there are other variables that I can see coming into play but I will mention that below. Are there any drawbacks or potential harmful impacts of this research design (or results?) The only drawbacks that I can see is that there are other "big" variables that come into play, such as age and diet, and each of these variables can skew the results. Thus, to be on the safe side I would set a strict standard and to test based on a range. For example, I would only bring in two types of subjects, one group should be around the 20-25 age range and the other group should be around the 30-40 range. Diet plays an important role and I believe that just exercising is not enough. Just to keep it simple, I would bring in subjects that fit the age range that I have mentioned and to have subjects that follow a good diet routine. What would be the NEXT STEP after this hypothetical research study were conducted and presented to the public? Can you propose a replication with a good twist? That’s often how research works and how the field is able to advance. Maybe you can think up a great Follow Up study! If this test is successful and shows that students who exercise have better grades, my next step would be to pit the students who exercise against students who take only essential nutrients but does not exercise daily. Example of essential nutrients would be, Flakseed Oil, Ginkgo Biloba, Fish Oil, etc. I think one will get some interesting results if this test were to be performed."
