Do Immigrant students perform better academically than U.S born students?

  • What area of interest/research question do you wish to explore through a research study design?

I want to find out if immigrant students perform better academically than U.S born students.

  • What variables or concepts are you looking to observe and/or manipulate?

I want to observe the academic performance by the two groups. For example: the weighted grade point average (GPA) of the groups.

  • What type of design would best suit your research question? (Experimental, Correlational, etc)

I believe, correlational study would be best suited.

  • What research method would you use to conduct your experiment? (Survey, case study, naturalistic observation, lab experiment, etc.)

I would use case study or survey to experiment the two groups.

  • Give a hypothesis about what you think you might find.

I believe, immigrant students perform better in school than U.S born. Immigrant students are more focused and determined because they realize the opportunity they have been given to study in U.S.Therefore, immigrant students are more mentally strong and focused in school to performance with higher potential than U.S born students.

  • What might be the benefits and implications of this study? In other words, who would gain from it?

The benefit of this case would acknowledge U.S born students that they have been also, given an opportunity to study in one of the most advance country in the world. Not many people in the world get that opportunity. Hopefully, it will make U.S born students more serious at school and performance better academically.

  • Please reflect on the process of designing this experiment. What were the challenges you faced? Was this more/less difficult than you expected? How?

I did not find it difficult at all. I compared the GPA of friends, those who were U.S born vs. Immigrant. Then, I calculated the mean of GPA of the both groups. I found out that my Immigrant friends had a higher mean.   school than U.S born students?

HELLO! by: Mohammed Ali

My name is Mohammed Ali. I am a transfer student from Lehman College. I am supposed to be a junior right now, but all my transfer credits were not accepted. Therefore, I am a sophomore. I plan to major in accounting. My favorite courses are subjects related to math because I like solving problems and dealing with numbers. In addition, I am drawn to courses in entrepreneurship due to my desire to open my own business. The student body in Baruch College is very diverse and I enjoy interacting with students from different background. Also, I like international food and I enjoy watching the show, “No reservation”. There is a link below and you can see all the episodes for free so feel free to check it out. :)PEACE!

"1. After reading the reflection writer’s description, what do you think was happening to them during the meditation on a physiological level? Her level of anxiety was slowly decreasing as she focused on her breathing. She realized that her Jaw was associated with bad tension and she fought against it. In the end, she became relaxed and calm. 2. Based on your readings throughout the semester, what areas of their central and peripheral nervous systems may have been effected during the meditation? I believe the parasympathetic nervous system have been effected during the meditation. 3. What questions do you have for the writer about their experience? Did you at any moment when you were meditating, you fell asleep or felt sleepy? 4. Based on the description provided, would you be open to trying the same meditation exercise? Yes, I would. In fact, I already tried a similar mediation and I quite like it."

"1. What is your reaction to the choices made by the author of this Reflection in terms of which memories they chose to keep and which memories they are discarding? I agree with the author that she wants to remember good and bad memories because all memories are important. Even if bad memories are painful to recover, this memories will give a deeper understanding of the mistakes she have made or the tragedy she went through. By recovering it, she will learn from it and will try to avoid it in the future. 2. How would you feel if this friend did not remember you (imagining that you are their longtime friend)? I will feel very sad, I might even cry a little. I would feel like a piece of my heart is missing if the person was very close to me. 3. What role might you play in helping them reconstruct their memory? I would be an important factor in recovering her memories. I will do the same activities we done in the pass to bring some kind of flashback to her and hopefully it will make her remember me. 4. Based on what you’ve learned in class and through your readings, what memory encoding, consolidation, and retrieval techniques might you use or teach to help this person recover and reintegrate their memories? I will use priming and association network to expose her to similar things we did in the past and she will hopefully remember what she did before and automatically act on doing it. Also, I will help her recover her explicit memory by stating the facts about her past and by making her experience some of the same actually event that occurred in the past that she forgotten."
