The Effects of Distraction on One’s Thoughts

I wanted to test by how much distraction will have an effect on someone’s reaction time in solving problems.

Does distracting a student hinder his or her ability to think?

There will be two randomized groups of 50 students each. Group A will solve multiplication problems on a computer without any other images on the screen, and without music as well. Group B will solve the same multiplication problems on a computer with images appearing on the side of the screen and loud music playing in the background. After the students are finished solving the problems, the number of right and wrong between the two groups will be compared to see if the distractions surrounding the students had an effect on their concentration and ability to think.

For this experimental design, I plan on using images and sounds as independent variables and the outcome of the math problems as the dependent variable.

My hypothesis is that the group of students who are not distracted by the images and sounds will score a higher grade than the group of students who were distracted by the images and sounds.

If my hypothesis turns out to be correct, I think this will benefit students everywhere, and help them realize that listening to music and doing other actions (such as Facebook) while doing homework or studying for a test will hinder them from getting the highest potential of studying or work that they would be doing, if not distracted.

I think thinking of the research question was hard to do because I had to find one that I could do, and was interested in.

Also when designing the experiment, it was hard to try to keep the amount of confounding variables to a minimum. So I had to change my research experiment a couple of times.

Hello!!

Hello! My name is Min Jee Choi and I am a freshmen in the Macaulay Honors program. I was born in South Korea and I came to the United States when I was 5 years old. I can speak, write, and understand Korean and English fluently, and I can speak and understand very little Spanish. I don’t have an intended major yet, but I do have an interest in finance or business law. I plan on taking many core/ elective classes to see if I can find a major in which I have a passion for.

I enjoy playing sports and I’m not afraid to sweat. My favorite sport is volleyball, and I was in my church’s volley team. Math is my favorite topic, but I am not taking a math class this semester. Science, especially chemistry, happens to be my worst subject, but physics was okay because there was math involved. I commute to Baruch everyday from Queens, which takes about an hour to an hour fifteen everyday. I don’t mind the commute yet.

And lastly, on mondays and wednesdays, I have a 6 hour break in between my two classes.

It was a pleasure to write a bit about myself on this blog! 🙂

The link attached is a cover done by two of the youtube stars I really like, Sam Tsui and Christina Grimmie. Check it out! 🙂

"1. After reading the reflection writer’s description, what do you think was happening to them during the meditation on a physiological level? On the physiological level, her muscles became more relaxed, but she still felt some tension left after the exercise. As they cleared their thoughts and mind, her body did as well. 2. Based on your readings throughout the semester, what areas of their central and peripheral nervous systems may have been effected during the meditation? CNS:The brain and the spinal cord relaxed, and so did the entire body 3. What questions do you have for the writer about their experience? How hard was it to clear your mind? Would you recommend this exercise? 4. Based on the description provided, would you be open to trying the same meditation exercise? I would like to try this exercise as she said she would try it again. There is a significant drop in anxiety and tension level as well to prove the results."

During the exercise, his muscles relaxed and all his tension went away. 2. Based on your readings throughout the semester, what areas of their central and peripheral nervous systems may have been effected during the meditation? There was less brain activity as he cleared his head and as he said, all of his muscle tensions went away . 3. What questions do you have for the writer about their experience? How hard was it to clear your mind? Was it easy to stay still during the whole exercise? 4. Based on the description provided, would you be open to trying the same meditation exercise? I would like to try this exercise as it was very successful for him and it helped him release all tensions he had in his muscles."

"1. After reading the reflection writer’s description, what do you think was happening to them during the meditation on a physiological level? I think that as he cleared his mind, his muscles started relaxing as a response. 2. Based on your readings throughout the semester, what areas of their central and peripheral nervous systems may have been effected during the meditation? CNS: His brain activity decreased because he was clearing his mind and he was releasing tensions. PNS: I think his heart rate would have gone down and his muscles loosened up. 3. What questions do you have for the writer about their experience? How hard was it to clear your mind? Any other difficulties than the need to change your sitting position? 4. Based on the description provided, would you be open to trying the same meditation exercise? I would like to try this exercise because of the results. His tension and anxiety went down greatly."

"1. After reading the reflection writer’s description, what do you think was happening to them during the meditation on a physiological level? I felt that the meditation did not ease her as much as it would have if she fell totally within into it. Either that, or the stress that she was under was too severe that meditation had some effect, but it's you just can't see it. 2. Based on your readings throughout the semester, what areas of their central and peripheral nervous systems may have been effected during the meditation? Her brain has been going through a lot of thought due to the stress she's under. I think brain activities decreased as she was meditating. Her PNS was affected for she became less tense and her heart rate decreased a bit. 3. What questions do you have for the writer about their experience? How hard was it to "concentrate" on not concentrating? Did thoughts continuously keep coming back to your head? 4. Based on the description provided, would you be open to trying the same meditation exercise? Because of the results, and how it was unsuccessful to her, I would not try this meditation."

"1) I would scramble through all my pictures and videos that I had as well, and family and best friends are definitely my number one choices to go to. 2) I feel that I would be worried incase you did not remember all the good times we had together. But then I would gain the determination in trying to make you remember your past. 3) I would be your advisor and supporter through your process in trying to remember your past. I think through this process, you will need a lot of support, in which I will provide. 4) I would use the method of rehearsal. I would show her pictures and videos everyday , and try to “force” her brain to unravel all the of the memories it has locked up."

"1) I also think that going through so many photos, videos, and other sources of memories all at once will be too hard and emotional because of the frustration at yourself for you can't remember anything. I think you trying to remember all of your memories, and not even forgetting the hard-times and sad memories, requires a strong heart and mind, in which you have. 2) I feel that I would be worried incase you did not remember all the good times we had together. But (in relation to the first response) because you do have a strong heart and mind, I would be confident that you would remember once again. 3) I would be your advisor and supporter through your process in trying to remember your past. I think through this process, you will need a lot of support, in which I will provide. 4) I would use the method of rehearsal. I would show her pictures and videos everyday , and try to "force" her brain to unravel all the of the memories it has locked up."

"1) I agree going back to your family is definitely one thing I would go for first as well. I went through my whole life them, and so, they could help me remember my past the most. I too would be scared of people for I won't be sure if they are telling the truth or not. 2) If you were my best friend, and you lost your memory, I would first be upset at the fact that you wouldn't remember all the good times we had together. But I would definitely know that this is not your fault. I would try to gather all the past pictures, videos, and items that we shared together, and would relive some days in which I found very memorable. 3) I would be your advisor and friend in trying to help you regain your memory back. Going through such an event, you need a strong base of support, in which I will help provide. I will take you to places that might be memorable, and coach you through the process of regaining your memory. 4) One technique I would use is rehearsal. I feel if I keep taking you to a certain place you used to go a lot, or revisit many pictures and videos you have taken before, I feel your memory will be forced to remember in time."

"1) I agree and like how Funlola chose to "relive" her past to recover her memories. And all the pictures, posts, and writings she have done herself would be a great way to help her remember her past. I would too go to my family members first if this happened to me. They are the ones I have lived my life with, so they must know about me a lot. 2) I would be extremely upset at the fact that the memories that we have spent together would be forgotten, as well as me. It would be hard to realize that the memories are gone, but after accepting the fact that they are, I would try my hardest to relive those experiences, and make sure that my best friend's memory returned. 3)I would relive the experiences I have spent with him. I would show him pictures, share the songs we enjoyed, share the same food, and even relive a day we have spent together exactly the way we spent it before. 4) Some retrieval techniques could be showing him pictures and videos of events in his life to help relay his memories. Also, making him meet people he doesn't remember and share their experience back to him might help him remember as well."
