Meditation Reflection

II

a. Before starting the meditation exercise, I was feeling exhausted, confused, bored, overwhelmed because of the amount of school work, some slow classes, my job and some personal issues.

b. On a scale of 1 to 10, my anxiety level were a 9 by the time the day was over. I’ve been worried on how I will do in all of my classes. If I will do good in my first semester here at Baruch. I barely have the time to relax, which factors in as well.

c. In my body, majority of the physical tension seems to be in my neck and my chest area.. so it would be rated about 8. Under stress I tend to have a heavy feeling in my chest and it feels as though it is being squeezed.

III

a. After meditation, my moods were much more relaxed, happy, confident and more in focus than being all over the place. I was easily able to figure out a game plan on what I will do when and how and I have been working effectively on this assignment as well as multitasking with a few other tasks easily since.

b. My anxiety levels are now around 2 instead of the 9 before I started with the meditation.

c. My physical tension, I now feel as though there is a less burden in my chest and my neck doesn’t ache or feel as stiff as it was (No longer had the need to crack it). I would rate that now a 3.

IV

The meditation that I chose was the Guided Meditation by Ajahn Sundara. The reason why I chose this meditation was because it is always a good idea to start off with a proper guide in meditation. It allowed me to focus easily on one thing, which was to relax and ease the tensions in my body. At first it is tough to block out thoughts from racing through my mind but after a little while, those thoughts began to fade away. In the future when I am extremely stressed and exhausted or in a similar position such as I was earlier, I do see my self trying this exercise again. However, instead of it meditating alone; I would rather have another person also following the meditation. I would try this again because It is a great way to loosen up your muscles and it clears your mind and allows you to work much more effectively.

Hi :)

Hello!

My name is Navjot Rani. But I would rather be called Navi. I am way to shy, and get extremely nervous when talking to new people. I am a transfer student from Adelphi University and this is my first actual semester at Baruch College. I grew up and lived in Queens since I was 5 years old (I was born in India).

During my free time, I like to go out with my friends, watch movies, read and watch TV (rarely). I also like web designing during my free time(Websites, photoshop graphics, etc). Psychology is not actually my major, I am currently a Business Management major. So far I have liked all of my classes this semester (Since I haven’t been dosing off in any of them). I do not belong to any clubs or organizations just yet, but in my old college, I was actually a founder of a club as well as the president for one and a half year (Since the day it was founded).

I don’t know what else to say. So, I suppose this is it.

Hi :).

"1. What is your reaction to the choices made by the author of this Reflection in terms of which memories they chose to keep and which memories they are discarding. You are right, its hard to trust anyone that you don't remember. For all you know they might have been the cause or knew but did not do anything to prevent the accident. Thing is, if you don't remember anything, the first thing you should do is figure out your name. The hospitals probably do have all of your belongings that the recovered from you (such as your ID), only then you'll be able to take the steps such as turning to your Facebook page and finding out who you actually knew using the contacts in your phone that was probably also recovered. I would be sad that you didn't remember me, but then you just got out of an accident so I would always keep that under consideration. And will also keep hoping that while you try to recover your memories, you will also remember me as your longtime friend. In order to help you reconstruct your memories, I will stick by your side and taking you all the places you loved and explaining everything you liked and didn't like. As your longtime friend, I would know almost everything about you so in order for you to recover your memory, I would automatically know where exactly to start first and what to do to help you piece your memories together that will help you remember almost everything about your life, good and bad. Bad not so much, but they will be helpful in letting you know what you should do and should not do because of the results from the time you tried it before your memory was gone. It will be more like a lessons thing. I will however make sure that no one would mess with your memory loss by trying you to become who you never were. Cause once you do regain your memory, it would not be so pleasant."

"1) The choices that are made throughout are quite agreeable and sensible. I myself would want to recover all memories, whether they are good or bad. As they say there is a reason for everything that happens. So, even if they are bad memories, there was a reason behind them and you are to learn from your bad experiences/ mistakes made in life. 2) If I were your longtime friend, then I would be really hurt that you did not remember me. 3)On the other hand, I would stick by your side help you recover most of the lost memories. To do this, I would help you relive and recreate the old good memories. As for the bad, I will help you stay away from those bad memories. But I will also help you out by not letting you face those bad memories again or make those same mistakes again. By describing what would happen if you take a specific step and what not. 4) This will go into association, social learning and enactive learning. Association by helping you piece some memories together through pictures and also piece them together with the small memories you still have in mind. Enactive learning will help you understand easily. It will give you a beginning experience and you'll be able to practice it later on without being told or asking for help."

"I completely agree with your hypothesis that students who tend to use laptops in class tend to get lower grades. I also have a laptop and use it to take notes in class. But I don't technically read those notes again since I just mainly use the textbook to study. However, they are good for recording voice notes. Say for example you miss important notes in class, and you're one of those peoples who are "shy" and don't like asking questions in class, then it can come in handy. Sometimes I forget to take notes myself. But that doesn't really affect me in a negative way since I learned that I would actually pay more attention and understand more rather than writing down something and carefully listening to the professor. However notes do come in handy when the textbook confuses you. You are right. If people do use it in the right way during class, they can make a difference in their grades. Just write down the stuff you cannot really find in the textbook but heard during class."

"As everyone above has mentioned, this is a good idea for an experiment. I would have to agree with both Pamela and Yunyan that the outcome is sort of inaccurate. As Pamela mentioned, some people can function with only 5 hours of sleep whereas others cannot. And Yunyan mentioned that people who sleep 10 hours or more will get better grades, between 10 and 6 will have average grades and those that sleep less than 6 hours low grades. If you don't get enough sleep, you are bound to forget whatever you have studied the night before and have those blank moments/ tip of the tongue phenomenon that later on results in flunking an exam. However, I also think that despite lack of sleep, if you review everything(at least twice a day) for a week, even sleep cannot mess up your grades cause you'll remember those things even when you're exhausted. But in all cases, it is just better to get enough sleep for all other daily tasks. Because if you don't then you will just be walking around feeling cranky and irritated over every little thing. And even if you do pass a test with little sleep, you will end up falling asleep at random times."

"Hi Abhinaya, Might I say you made the right choice by coming to New York. It is a great city and always places to go. Like you I am also planning on becoming a lawyer. But instead of economics I am studying business management. Wish you the best of luck with your plans!"
