Memory Reflection

1.)How would you begin the process of recovering your memory? Who would you turn to, where would you search, and how would you proceed?

If I were to experience retrograde amnesia, I would commence the process of recovering my memory by thinking optimistically that I might have a chance of regaining some of my memory back. Before anything, I would listen to the doctor and follow his instructions by taking the medication he prescribes for me. Most importantly, I would want my family to be there for me because I spent my whole life with them. With my friends and family there to support me, I’ll probably feel ten times more confident because these are the people that mean a lot to me.  Even now, I always look at my photos to recall a memory from my past experiences. I enjoy looking at pictures as they depict a vivid memory of a certain past experience. Also, I would watch my videos from my childhood and ask my friends and family to take me to the places I frequently went to before this tragic incident occurred.

2.)Please describe the emotional journey you imagine you would be going through as you attempt to reconstruct your life. Imagine the feelings you would have

I can only imagine what an emotional journey I would be going through as I try to reconstruct my life without being able to recall my cherished memories from the past. Even if people tell me about a certain memory, I’m sure I won’t believe them because it’s something I won’t be able to remember. Knowing how I react to certain situations even today, I’ know that I will be very frustrated at the smallest things. Since I won’t have any memories after the incident, there’s going to be a lot of things that I will have to relearn which will be very tiring both emotionally and physically. At times, I’m sure I’ll have a mental breakdown and question why this memory loss happened to me instead of someone else. It’ll probably be a long emotional journey but with my friends and family around, I’m sure I can somehow accept the fact that I might have to reconstruct my life by relearning everything around me.

3.)Suppose you were able to pick and choose the memories you wanted to recover from your life. What types of memories would you choose to retain and what types of memories might you decide to edit out of your remembered experience? Positive, negative, painful, happy, angry, frightened, etc. Please elaborate and explain some your decision making process.

A lot of people might just want the happy memories from the past but I definitely think that picking out some of the negative memories can help you learn from your past mistakes. I would want to choose the happy and negative experiences from my life. Through negative experiences, one can learn that hardships can be overcome and can learn to not make the same mistake ever again.

HELLO

Hello, my name is Sharon Kim. I am originally from Los Angeles, California and I’ve been in New York for about 3-4 years. So far I’m getting used to this new city and I absolutely love how different this city is compared to Los Angeles. I transferred into Baruch college this semester from Pace University. The reason why I transferred into Baruch College was because it is well known for their business program. My major is business undecided and I plan on either majoring in Finance or Accounting. I love photography, fashion, and meeting new people.  Psychology is not my intended major but I do enjoy this subject as it keeps me awake unlike the rest of my classes. If anything, I am thinking of minoring in psychology. I recently joined the Korean American Club and I’m also thinking of joining the accounting or finance clubs at this school. That sums up a brief summary of who I am!

"1.)After reading the reflection writer’s description, what do you think was happening to them during the meditation on a physiological level? During the writer’s meditation process, the writer becomes relaxed as her mind seems to be at ease. As she is listening to the wise words from the radio, she is able to block out all the negative thoughts from the outside world. She is focused and starts to take in the words Fronsdal is reciting from his poem. 2.)Based on your readings throughout the semester, what areas of their central and peripheral nervous systems may have been effected during the meditation? The parasympathetic nervous system is where everything becomes relaxed as it sends happy thoughts and emotions to the brain. That is why meditation allows one become relaxed and calm. 3.) What questions do you have for the writer about their experience? Where did you find this audio by Gil Fronsdal? 4. Based on the description provided, would you be open to trying the same meditation exercise? Yes, I would be open to try this exact meditation exercise as it seems very relaxing."

"1. After reading the reflection writer’s description, what do you think was happening to them during the meditation on a physiological level? As this person decided to meditate in the heat, she was able to relive her stress through this guided meditation. Although the heat can be overwhelming, it calmed her down by improving her emotional state by decreasing her stress anxiety. Meditation is reputed to be one of the influential methods that often help a person to become stress free by improving one’s emotional state. This person was able to forget all the troubles that were on her mind by putting her utmost attention to this meditation. 2. Based on your readings throughout the semester, what areas of their central and peripheral nervous systems may have been effected during the meditation? Meditation is known to relax one’s body and mind as it activates the parasympathetic nervous system. The parasympathetic part of the peripheral NS basically allows the mind to return to its calm stage as it allows the rest of the brain and body to be at rest. When the body is relaxed, the brain is happy which has to do with the prefrontal cortex. 3. What questions do you have for the writer about their experience? For me, I had the hardest time focusing when I tried out hot yoga. All I could think about was the time and how hot the room was. How were you able to refocus after losing the concentration during your meditation? 4. Based on the description provided, would you be open to trying the same meditation exercise? I personally tried this exercise a few months ago and it was the most intense exercise I have tried in my life. I ended up not going back because I was afraid that I would have a heat stroke from the 110 degree temperature but I plan on going back sometime this week so that I can get used to the heat."

"My hypothesis of the study’s outcome would be that the students who actually eat breakfast will perform better on the tests because the person will be more energized compared to the person who did not have any breakfast. If I don’t have any breakfast before a test I get very nervous and angry at the fact that I’m hungry. When I am very hungry, I cant stop thinking about food which leads me to worry about my stomach making noises before a test. Rather than a 10 minute story I would go for a memory test and have the students fill out a survey to see who had breakfast or not. I think that having breakfast does improve students’ memory but doesn’t really have to do with the effect on school performance. I don’t think there are any drawbacks or potential harmful impacts of this research design."
