Meditation Reflection

First, take note of the moods you’ve experienced.

This morning, I felt annoyed because of the weather. When I went to my Communication class, I felt relaxed and calm since I didn’t have to present today.  I only need to sit down with a free mind, watching my classmates but thinking about other things most of the time. Then I went to my next class, I felt bored and tired. At some point, I was extremely awake because my professor got irritated by students who came late to class. I felt excited when the class was over, because it meant club hours. I left school with a smile because I went to my professor’s office to check my midterm grade, and found out I did well on the exam (I took the exam last Thursday, I thought I did really bad, and I was very upset. In addition to other issues, last Thursday became an extremely bad day for me). At the end, I went shopping with my best friend. I was satisfied and happy when I saw the decorations, candies and treats for Christmas. I wondered how my moods fluctuated today; my mood experienced a huge change compared to last Thursday!

Assess your overall level of anxiety on a scale of 1 to 10.

I am an anxious person, I am afraid of making mistakes. I do things slowly; I always worry about not having enough time, especially before something is due.  I would say my overall level of anxiety is 7.

Assess the level of physical tension in your body- where do you notice the tension? Try rating your overall tension on a scale of 1 to 10.

I think my level of physical tension is 3. I feel calm but sleepy.

After you have finished your meditation, re-asses your
state of mind and body.

Reassess your mood on the chart.

After meditating, I feel less tense and sleepier. I feel confused at the same time because I wonder if meditation will cause people to feel tired.

Reassess your level of anxiety from 1 to 10.

My level of anxiety is now reduced to 3.

Reassess your level of physical tension and rate it from 1 to 10.

My level of physical tension now is 2. I feel warm, but I am not sure if it is resulted from meditating or from the heat.

Describe the experience– What type of meditation did you
choose? Describe what was going on in your mind and your body, what kind of thoughts and sensations did you experience during the meditation? Were there any challenging or frustrating aspects of the experience, and if so, what were they? Would you try this again in the future? Why or why not?

I’ve decided to do one of the audio guides found online. It is called Guided Meditation: Body Sweep. As I followed Leigh Brasington’s directions, I tried to be focused and not to think about other things. I followed my breath. My attention moved and reached different parts of my body.

During meditation, there were many pauses. My mind was empty during those quiet moments, and I can hear the clock ticking. Since I was already sleepy before meditating, I felt calm and sleepier as the process continued. To be honest, I almost fell asleep during the process. I think meditation is similar to hypnosis. I may try this again in the future, but I will do this when I am awake and when I feel stressful, not like this time, when I felt sleepy, tired, and not very stressful. In this way, I can compare my experience before and after meditating with less confounding variables.

Hello class

Hello class, my name is Wanying Wu. If my Chinese name is too hard to pronounce, you can call me Iris. I am a sophomore at Baruch and my intended major is finance. I like math and science because it doesn’t take me a long time to finish my math homework. While for liberal art subjects such as English, it takes me forever. I like biology because I want to know more about our bodies. I want to know how the body works and what kind of nutrition we need. My favorite classes so far are economics and biology. Although in biology, we have lab and we need to dissect a pig, I still enjoy learning how the human body functions. For example, I learned how our kidney works and I learned why people have diarrhea and constipation. I used to panic when I hear the word “Psychology,” but I found out that it is actually a quite interesting field since I have taken PSY 1001. I wish my passion for this never runs out.

I have never had a job, probably because I look too young. People always thought I am 15 or 16 years old. Actually, I do not want a job until junior year in college because I want to be more engaged in school work. I want to be focused and get a decent GPA. I only have 3 or 4 more years in school, while the rest of my life will contribute to my work. My memory will become worse as I age, thus I think I should learn the most in these years. Currently, I am one of Hong Kong Club’s staffs. Hong Kong Club is an amazing place to make new friends and relax. Anyone who is interested in Hong Kong culture and food should join our family!

Lastly, I want to post some of the pictures I took. I am fond of photography and music. A couple of years ago, one of my dream jobs was to be a piano teacher. I don’t have piano class anymore because college is busy, but I still practice when I have free time.

"1. I think the author made a wise choice in terms of which memories she chose to keep and which memories she was discarding, because she wants to retain her happiest moments. At the same time, she is not trying to cover or hide her unhappy memories. I think this is because she wants to know and remember everything about herself; if she cannot remember the bad moments, how can she compare those times with the happy moments? She probably won't feel happy if all she could remember is her happy memories. She also wants to know her mistakes so that she won't hurt any people around her. 2. If she doesn't remember me, I feel sad and helpless because it takes a long time to recover her memory. She will feel unfamiliar with the place where she belongs and she won't recognize any people. I feel like something is missing in my life because she is my friend, we were close to each other and we knew each other well. Retrograde amnesia might cause her to become another person with a different personality, and we might not be as close as before. I will feel very sorry. 3. I may bring her to the places where we used to go and tell her what she used to be like. I will accompany her frequently so that she will feel more comfortable and realize that someone cares about her. 4. In order to help her recover and reintegrate her memories, I would like to use some of the retrieval methods. For example, if I want her to remember a particular event or experience, I will bring up a similar situation and see how she feels and reacts. Perhaps part of her memory will flash back in her mind. If it doesn't work, then I will tell her how she reacted in the past."

"* My hypothesis of this experiment is that people who sleep more have a better mood than those who don’t have enough sleep. * My suggestion on how to improve the proposed study is that the researcher can do a survey based on the amount of sleep hours each participant actually needs prior to the proposed study. Then the researcher should choose participants who get the same amount of sleep hours every night. Otherwise, people who usually have 6 hours of sleep will not be affected if they are asked to sleep for 6 hours during the experiment, only people who don't usually get 6 hours of sleep will be affected. * The drawback of this research is that some people do not require 8 hours of sleep each night, they may need 6 or 7 hours. Therefore, it may not apply to everyone. * The next step after this hypothetical research study was conducted can be proposing a research about whether a person’s mood affects his or her sleep quality."
