Career Research Assignment

Filed under: Uncategorized — Jaishree Ramroop at 1:23 pm on Monday, April 5, 2010

Throughout my childhood years there has been much occupation that interested me. I wanted to be a scientist, a professional tennis player and I even dreamt of becoming a famous movie star. I would be considered a typical dreamer in my childhood years. I was indecisive about my career goals for a long time and I was told that it was acceptable. It was during my junior year in High School that I took an interest in accounting. I didn’t know much, just that I was good in my accounting class. The assignment on researching careers has helped me better understand the skills and the personal attributes that I have in order to peruse a career in accounting.

To pursue a career in accounting I would have to have some attributes such as honesty, be trustworthy, organized, not be afraid of detail (6). Some personal attributes that I have that are relevant are I am very detail oriented, organized, trustworthy and interested in math. I am also committed and persistent which would be for any career path. Some of my strengths would be that I am well-spoken, work with people well, specialist in Microsoft Word and PowerPoint and is comfortable using spreadsheet. These strengths can be used in Bookkeeping and even Budget Analyst (2, 3). In addition to this I’ve always had a great deal of interest in computers and could possibly pursue an alternate career in computer system also.

To pursue my original interest in accounting I would have to have some personal preparation, educational attainment, and practical experiences that are required. First I would have to be preparing to work long hours and be committed, take the require courses gearing towards it. As with educational attainment, I would have to get my bachelor’s degree in accounting or a related field. I would possibly have to take the Certified Public Accountant Exam if I want to become a CPA and 150 semester hours of college coursework. Some practical experience that I would need to be an Accountant would be previous work experience which can be obtained through part-time internships (1, 5). Some of these requirements that are needed to pursue a career in Accountant are along the same path that I might need to pursue my alternate careers. For computer system, I will have to take more computer course and have an internship in that field. My alternate careers are not distant from the career I think I want. In order to decision I plan on taking classes and explore my options.

HEY,

Jaishree here! Many people thinks I’m Spanish but I am originally from Guyana. A lot of people don’t know where that is and whenever they hear South America they automatically thinks it’s a Spanish country. Although it is next to Venezuela and Brazil we do not speak Spanish. We speak creole, not the one Haitians speaks, it is another kind of English.

In Guyana education is enforced at a very young age and the child is expected to live up to thier parents expectation as far as education goes. Teachers were allowed to hit students when I was going to school and I believe because of this and the many strict rules my parents laid out helped me to become very ambitious and determine in what I want.

I am a determined hard worker. At school I strive for my grades to be from an A- to A+. I work hard as possible to get there and  whenever I hit that range I feel proud of myself for accomplishing it and now more so since I’m in college. It is much more challenging but it reassures me that I can do and get anything I wish for with hard work.

Another strength that I’ve discovered over the past year is that I can take on a leadership role whenever possible. I come to understand that with being a leader you need to be well organized and manage your time effectively. These are two qualities I had with me and was reenforced when I had to take over a leader’s role for a presentation. My group was behind in putting together a presentation and I stepped up and was able to get the presentation done in time by assigning roles for everyone and putting together the final product.

During the first semester of college, I was told that I am a well spoken individual. This was a skill I was not aware of and always critized myself when I give speaches and presentations. I was able to develop this skill by being part of Toastmasters for a year. They’ve helped me deal with the anxiety that comes with speacking publicly and how to give a great speech by connecting with the audience.

Altough I have many strengths, I do have a weakness. No one is perfect in everything but I am a perfectionist when it comes to organization and management. I’ve noticed throughout the years that I tend to want things to be well-organized. For example, little things as takin and keeping my notes in order and having everything labeled in my stattionary drawer. I feel in control and not overwhelmed when things are organzied and I know what I have to do.

Hello world!
