Career Research Assignment

Throughout my childhood years there has been much occupation that interested me. I wanted to be a scientist, a professional tennis player and I even dreamt of becoming a famous movie star. I would be considered a typical dreamer in my childhood years. I was indecisive about my career goals for a long time and I was told that it was acceptable. It was during my junior year in High School that I took an interest in accounting. I didn’t know much, just that I was good in my accounting class. The assignment on researching careers has helped me better understand the skills and the personal attributes that I have in order to peruse a career in accounting.

To pursue a career in accounting I would have to have some attributes such as honesty, be trustworthy, organized, not be afraid of detail (6). Some personal attributes that I have that are relevant are I am very detail oriented, organized, trustworthy and interested in math. I am also committed and persistent which would be for any career path. Some of my strengths would be that I am well-spoken, work with people well, specialist in Microsoft Word and PowerPoint and is comfortable using spreadsheet. These strengths can be used in Bookkeeping and even Budget Analyst (2, 3). In addition to this I’ve always had a great deal of interest in computers and could possibly pursue an alternate career in computer system also.

To pursue my original interest in accounting I would have to have some personal preparation, educational attainment, and practical experiences that are required. First I would have to be preparing to work long hours and be committed, take the require courses gearing towards it. As with educational attainment, I would have to get my bachelor’s degree in accounting or a related field. I would possibly have to take the Certified Public Accountant Exam if I want to become a CPA and 150 semester hours of college coursework. Some practical experience that I would need to be an Accountant would be previous work experience which can be obtained through part-time internships (1, 5). Some of these requirements that are needed to pursue a career in Accountant are along the same path that I might need to pursue my alternate careers. For computer system, I will have to take more computer course and have an internship in that field. My alternate careers are not distant from the career I think I want. In order to decision I plan on taking classes and explore my options.
