Next Steps…

I’m much more of a care free person, I have a very general plan of what I hope my life to be, but I won’t be upset if I deviate from that plan. My schedule for next semester allows me to have a lot of free time during the week. I chose this because I wanted to become more active in the community, such as clubs and even outside the school. The community service project has introduced me into doing something more besides school work in my spare time. I’ve seen various programs I’d like to try, like a pottery class I found in Brooklyn. While I want to focus on exploring my more liberal arts interests I still want to look into my business interests. I want to continue to attend various lectures the school has in areas I might be interested in like finance or the nonprofit sector. The speakers we had in FYS also peeked my interest especially the counseling center. I intend to do their introductory session this semester and continue to attend whenever I feel I need the additional support. I think it’s great to have this option around for all students to use and Baruch has many more to offer. I’ll not only going to be visiting the counseling center I’ll be at the writing center too! It was much more clear and helpful than I could have ever imagined it to be and I’ll definitely be going back. All the services Baruch provide for free is really astounding. More long term I hope to tutor for SACC and whenever the stress becomes too much I’m more than happy attending a tutoring session. I hope to make Baruch feel like a second home in the coming years and I can’t wait to experience it all.

What does it mean to serve your community?

Often it’s said that we cannot get far in life without those who helped us. The scholars program is an example of that and why it’s important to give back. The volunteering aspect of the Baruch honors program is essential in teaching this philosophy, of giving back when you can. I’ve always tried to apply this to my life in volunteering at my old school, and I’m happy to continue this here at Baruch. Volunteering is not only about continuing the flow of good deeds but also learning from others through action. Participating in a soup kitchen can help a student better appreciate his or her life. Programs that aim to teach young kids or other students in lower grade levels reflect the effort and length we’ve put into our education. It also lets us focus on ourselves more by connecting with people on different environments and backgrounds then comparing our lives to theirs. Simply doing something for the community isn’t enough, it’s more than just doing something good because you’re forced to. The Honors requirement allows a lot of flexibility by letting the groups choose where they want to practice. For instance, if you have an interest in helping people that have been affected by something you have experience in the past you can choose to aid. The experiences we have now will come to shape ourselves in the future, it’s imperative that we receive some exposer now to further aid our professional development.

First Blog, All About Me

Where have you been and Where are you going?

Is such a common question yet I still have a hard time answering it. For the most part of my life I live in good o’l Canton, Georgia just shy of Atlanta. My childhood consisted of riding a big yellow bus to school every morning unless there was an inch of snow, then school would be closed for a week. I loved to open air and waking up to the sounds of birds and wind rustling leaves. Although I enjoyed my time in Canton I’ve grown to enjoy life here in the fast paced, barley working, and so community oriented New York City.

It’s been about three years since I’ve moved and I’m not planning on moving away anytime soon. While unlike the rest of the school I’m undecided about my major. I have interests in a lot of field and I plan to try them out to see which one I’d like the most. Who knows what will happen in the next four years I could die or become the world’s youngest president. A quote that has really resonated with me is, “All the trees are losing their leaves and not one of them is worried.” – Donald Miller. Whatever does happen I’ll be happy with it and look forward for what’s next to happen. I’m lucky to say I have excellent support from family and friends and when things do head south I know I’ll pull through.

Thank you
