In Other News: Former NYPD Officer Peter Liang Sentenced

While #NYPrimary has taken over much of the news cycle for the day, former NYPD Officer Peter Liang was sentenced to five years probation and community service nearly two months after he was convicted in the 2014 shooting death of Akai Gurley, an unarmed black man shot in the unlit stairwell of the infamous Pink Houses by Liang.

“I find that given the defendant’s background, and given how remorseful he is that it would not be necessary to incarcerate the defendant to have a just sentence in this case, said Brooklyn Supreme Court Justice Danny Chun.

Liang had been facing upwards of 15 years in prison after a jury found him guilty of manslaughter.
