Journal #3 – Next Steps…

My first semester here at Baruch encouraged me to try new things and utilize many resources that were readily available to me. In my classes, most of the professors were understanding and provided a lot of help when I needed it. In my community service group, we used the honors study room to plan ahead for our presentation. Another great resource was the William and Anita Newman Library. Here, there were librarians, laptops, and lots of support. Some floors of the library were quiet enough to get work done! Another great resource was Mr. Medina. He was incredibly helpful when it came to questions about most of the things that were Baruch-related.

As of right now, I have not committed to any club. Although I did attend a lot of the introductory meetings for different clubs and even attended a bunch of events for Baruch’s ECO (Environmental Cooperation Organization) club, I could not find anything to fully commit to. In the next three years, maybe I will find a club that suits me. Or, maybe I won’t find any club and be perfectly fine on my own!

As for the community service event, it really taught me a few important lessons. My understanding of community service did not drastically change or evolve as a result of my participation in the project, but it did grow a bit. I came to realize the importance of working together as a team and communicating with each other to get ideas across. As they say, communication is key. Additionally, the community service event reinforced the importance of my peers and fellow scholars!

In the next three years, I see myself growing and becoming a better person than I am today. I would love to complete a lot of the work required for my major and to be graduating or nearly graduating in the next three years!

Journal #2 – What does it mean to serve your community?

To me, serving my community means to give back and to help others with or without asking for something in return. It could mean helping an old lady cross the street or donating some money to charities or schools. It could mean volunteering at a shelter or assisting people in need. For most of my life, people have been serving the community that I have enjoyed living in. Volunteers, firefighters, garbage men, social workers, bus drivers, doctors, and other great people have been serving my community selflessly. In the Baruch Scholars program, generous people give donations and scholarships so that the scholars receive full tuition. Not only are we helped by people like our advisor and our peer mentor, we also have access to many great services.

As for me, I am currently a student in Baruch. However, my role is not just as a student. Every day, I am learning new skills and growing as a person so that eventually, I can serve my community on a larger scale. Serving my community comes one step at a time. The Honors Program at Baruch promotes volunteering and giving back to the community through required engagement in community service. It is where I believe I will start my journey into giving back and serving my community. For me, I believe that this community service not only helps the people that are in need, but it also helps the scholars grow as a person and helps the scholars discover new things about themselves. It raises awareness between privilege and responsibility. I look forward to serving my community and working with my peers!

Journal #1

Hello! My name is Kevin. I was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York. Even though I have spent my entire life in New York, I have been to many places and seen many things. I am set on having Finance as my major, but that is subject to change.

I am shaped by events in my day-to-day life. In New York, everyone seems to have a place they want to go and a dream they want to achieve. Anywhere I go, there are always people who are motivated and that in turn motivates and changes me. Because I am only 18 years old, I haven’t had any specific moment that defined me. The changes and experiences that I have been through were not entirely world-changing. They were small and gradual. However, they still shaped me and changed who I was.

As a college student, I don’t have extremely high expectations. As much as I would love to receive A’s on all my exams or have everything go my way, I expect some failure and some success in school. There will be bad days and there will be good days. I hope to meet new people and learn new things, but I also hope to manage my time efficiently and remain happy and healthy. The biggest concern that I have so far is with getting enough sleep. I plan to make changes to my schedule and lifestyle to accommodate my sleep schedule and to get enough rest.

Thank you for reading!
