How does the way the father narrates the story effect the way certain elements of the story are told? For example how he speaks in a very conversational manner does it feel more real?
I think Valdek Speigelman’s narration allows readers to get a more organic/ natural take on the holocaust from a real survivor. The conversational style makes the story easy to follow and makes the story much more emotional than it would be if it were told in a different manner (third person). Readers can easily put themselves in his shoes, see his struggles, feel the pain he felt, and understand why he did what he did. His English isn’t perfect, which adds a touch of authenticity to the story. Even the breaks between the narration help readers to get a sense of who Valdek is and how the war and death of his wife has changed him.
