NY Times: Nail Fungus Untreated?
Recently there has been a big debate about nail fungus. Should nail fungus go untreated?
This is the current dilemma. Why would you not treat nail fungus? This has been a question that
has gone through my mind for a while. Well Anahad O’Connor (journalist) says that nail fungus
treatment medication is most associated with liver damage. The effects of fungus on the nail is a
problem. The fungus starts at the top of the nail and slowly progresses to the cuticle. The spread
of fungus can lead to a lot of discomfort and inflammation. Overtime, the fungus can spread to
other parts of the body such as the back, hands, legs and etc. In order to avoid such progression
two new medications are being developed right now (Efinaconazole and Tavaborole). These two
new medications have little to no affect on the liver. How long do you have to wait? The longer
you wait for treatment the worse the condition gets.
