Running down the stairs, I carried multiple college flyers and squeezed myself between the crowds of students. I spotted a pamphlet containing the three letter words, NYC. A city where dreams start and blossom into beautiful bouquets, my eyes sparkled and reached the college flyer, Baruch College.
Perhaps if my school counselor did not invite Baruch representative on college fair that day, I would not have applied to Baruch. During my senior year of high school, I wanted to find a major that combines mathematics and a specific detail-oriented career. On my journey to researching colleges, many top business schools’ tuition fees are unaffordable for my family. My application did not stand out from thousands of applicants to receive enough scholarships. However, Baruch offered me the opportunity to be able to receive an education in accounting at a reasonable tuition fee. I shared many thoughts and conversations with teachers and friends in high school to decide on majoring in accounting, I came to the conclusion that it was worth the time and money to go to school in Baruch.
I enjoy digital illustration and fine arts in my free time. My career choice between accounting and illustration was my first step of a milestone. Going into an art school does not guarantee access to academic education, but going into Baruch will open a road of basic level in art education. In another aspect, art will remain as a hobby of mine. Developing an art style, studying photos and making a portfolio for a specific industry requires more than four years. Art is a space to express creator’s thoughts, freedom, and aesthetics. Following strict rules for what art was meant to be freedom and expression, I refuse to step into the designing industry. However, starting my business as an artist and entrepreneur is something that I look forward to accomplishing. Aside from my thoughts, my parents did not approve an art major. As the first generation to go to college in my family, I had to make a realistic choice. My high school friends and teachers were happy with my decision. They believed that I will do great wherever I go to school.
To keep illustration as a hobby, I have to be able to provide myself the tools and stable financial background to start. I do realize that I would not have the same time and energy spent on drawing compared to people who study art, but I will move on my own pace. Being in a community such as Baruch where everybody is working their hardest and trying their best, I am sure that I can get inspired by the Bearcat community.
This website will be dedicated to sharing my professional journey in accounting and my passion for art. I hope to carry on my accounting career further and start my business as a freelance illustrator. In the hopes of the success of my career, I will contribute back to society and provide goods or services to the people.
