Hot Take: Making a Case for the Black Digital Humanities

After reading Kim Gallon’s “Make a Case for the Black Humanities”, a particular quote stuck out to me. Gallon explains, “Recovery rests at the heart of Black studies, as a scholarly tradition that seeks to restore the humanity of black people lost and stolen through systemic global racialization.” In other words, Gallon is explaining how the “technology of recovery” benefits black digital humanities by restoring humanity or humanness to black people. For a period of time, Black people were not recognized as people but rather as property so it is important for the community to “prove” the humanity of these people through media showcasing their human experiences.
