Fiction and nonfiction work both has different effects on the reader in my opinion. Fiction is based on the author’s imagination while nonfiction is information based on facts. I feel like once the reading is fiction, the reader wouldn’t take it as serious as a non fiction reading. I feel nonfiction readings were made to inform and teach while fiction reading is to entertain. Non fiction readings like history books, biographies teach you new information. In “The Art of The Ancestors” on page 673 it explains how our ancestors had made different sculptures to represent the culture and how it influences art today in different countries. On page 673 it states “Primitive African wood and bronze sculpture is now universally recognized as a “notable instance of plastic representation”. Long after it was known as ethological material, it was artistically discovered and has exerted an important influence upon modernist art, both in France and Germany.” This explains that the Negro art was unique back then and to still has influence on art today.
Poems is a way of expressing your feelings with your imagination and sometimes it may rhyme and have a rhythm. A report in my eyes is a summary of the topic your talking about with evidence supporting your claim. I feel like poetry can inform you about certain things but I don’t think it can inform you like a report. When you read a poem, it doesn’t give you the same feeling as if you read a report. I feel like poems were used for explaining history in different ways but having data gathered and analyzed just makes the information more accurate. In my opinion Poems vs Data data would win 99% of the time because data is information gathered from facts and the information is more accurate. For example businesses do a balance sheet every month and it reports the liabilities, and the company’s assets and with that information you can interpret how the business did that month. A poem wouldn’t be able to do that.
For example “The Art of The Ancestors” is a nonfiction reading which informs you about negro art and how it was recognized back then. On page 673 it states “The Negro in his American environments turned predominantly to the arts of music, the dance, and poetry, an emphasis quite different from that of American culture.” Negro art included poems but I don’t think it was used to explain real life experiences, probably used to entertain. Also I don’t think you learn as much form reading a poem compared to reading a report or a non fiction reading. In my opinion if I wanted to explain something like my experience in college, I wouldn’t use a poem to do that would rather write a report. I feel like reading a fictional reading would just expand your creativity and imagination while if you read a non fiction you’ll learn a couple things. For example from this reading I learned that Negro art had some type of influence on modern European artists.
