Looking Beyond The Surface

The article “what shall we do” is an editorial made in 1925 by Joseph K. Hart. What the editorial is trying to communicate is wake up and to look beyond the surface. We must get the facts. There are people in the mainstream that only reports the surface. They see black people commit criminal acts in poor communities, but that’s only the surface. But not report the systemic inequality that been prevalent in this country for decades. Keep in mind that systemic inequalities are thing that have financial deprive most black communities across America for decades. Looking beyond the surface is understanding the core of why people do what they do. There is a difference between people doing what they want to do versus what they need to do. During the enlightenment period slavery was justified by saying that they were “saving” Africans from themselves, however this more about a power trip than “saving”. A system of power and history. I see this prevalent today; with covid; there is a fight between the vaccine or not; the right wing uses historical fear to convince people not get vaccinated. While in the same breath most of major figures has gotten vaccinated themselves. This is also occurring in this editorial, where Hart argues, “We prefer fantasies to facts; and we like our fancies to be flavored with fearsomeness.” With this example, we can see how fear may cause us to look just at the surface of things instead of deeper into them. We see in history again that using surface of information to manipulate the masses. During the time of slavery Black and African Americans were not allowed to learn how to read or to write, yet we have greats like Equiano, Frederick Douglas Booker t Washington etc. Who taught themselves how to read and write, despite being deprived of education? As we notice this consistent pattern that has been presented today. This can allow us to see importance of the article “The Trope of a New Negro”.  The connection here all forms of media is a tool. This tool throughout history have been use shed light on the truth, lies or the surface. Purpose of media is delivering relevant information and influence the masses. Living in digital age we can see that information get to anyone quickly. However, short video, music and art showcase and people weigh in their opinions. Therefore, image is everything like “The Trope of a New Negro” suggests because one clip or video can make a person, a group and nation to be portrayed in a certain light. We must recognize that owned Black publications are important because it allow people to see the whole picture, not the surface. Not to say Black publication speaks for all Blacks in America, but it helps combat against false negative image of Blacks. W.E.B Dubois was doing this with “The Crisis” by adding different covers of during different times. In my opinion a lot of cover signify survival. However, the covers were used to teach the public about Blacks in America. Whether it’s their experience in America, to how black men and women look like. In conclusion the most important thing to remember is what’s really the truth is not just what we see.
