Pedro Lebron Ortiz’s seminar/presentation was very interesting. He was both articulate and definitely had a clear understanding of what he was talking about. The presentation, although clear in the title, was to understand the meaning of marronage. The word marronage in the literal sense means the process of freeing oneself from slavery. Marronage relates to the term Maroons which was a term used for African or African-American individuals that had escaped from slavery in southern american. Pedro’s presentation focused on him reflecting about marronage to me it felt as if he was constantly speaking of a sort freedom of mental slavery. This mental slavery as he was explaining arose from european modernity and eurocentrism , one must free themselves from this slavery and believe this is what he meant by the term contemporary marronage. Pedros use of quotes throughout his presentation helps understand a little better of what his understanding of marronage really is. He referred to the reading Souls of black folk by W.e.b. Du bois which i thought was interesting because in a way i feel like his presentation was very similar to how Du bois formulated his essays.Pedro spoke on many different quotes and writings that he himself wrote one that i feel he focused on was the writing Filosofia del cimarronaje which in english is translated to philosophy of the marronage. The writing Filosofia del cimarronaje as described was written in the aftermath of Hurricane maria which was the hurricane that devastated hit Puerto rico in 2017. I took it upon myself to look at a small summary of it on amazon books. It seems as if this book is just a reflection on liberating oneself until then one could live freely in society without having any other outside opinions corrupting their minds. I believe this reflection is solely based on a reaction due to the aftermath of a devastating hurricane that hit his home country. I want to end this blog with a quote that he used that i feel his whole presentation built up to “ where slavery does not end neither does marronage, which is the veritable epitome of unbroken or unbreakable life”.
