A couple of things stood out to me as I was watching the movie, Passing. One of the things that I found interesting was how to movie was able to covey this almost juxtaposed feeling of joy and horror about being able to successfully infiltrate white spaces and society by being able to pass as white. The joy comes from the acceptance into white society that brings with it simple benefits like being able to be with a romantic partner and display affection publicly. Or it was simple as enjoying a cup of tea without the nagging anxiety of being found out. On the flip side, the horror is also the acceptance, because being viewed as white allows you into a circle where you get to hear what white people think and say about Black people behind closed doors. And it’s not necessarily like white people had a problem about saying derogatory things about Black people to their face, it’s more that instead of these remarks being directed to you, as someone who passes you now wield the power to be the oppressor.
