Passing by Nella Larsen (the novel)

Passing The Novel Hot Take

As I was reading part one of Encounter, I realized that the film and the novel are very similar. In the novel it shows that Claire’s husband is a racist and it would make the reader think why would she want to be with a person like that. Also in the novel you can tell as Claire starts hanging out with Irene and her husband more she starts to get a little jealous. In my opinion I don’t think the novel affects you the way the movie does because just having the movie in black and white has a lot of effect on the watcher. Also the way Irene looks at Claire you could tell she wanted to live that life of dancing at social events and having a family instead of living a life where she had to hide who she truly was.

  1. I agree that the movie does a good job of showing us how the characters feel about each other, especially the relationship that Clare and Irene have. The book can’t show us the body language and facial expressions the way that the movie does, and reading a description of the face somebody is making isn’t the same as when we actually see it. The looks they give each other in the movie say 1000 words.

  2. I also agree that the movie did a good job on showing the characters feelings where as in the book you cant physically see it. Also how seeing the film first already has me seeing it in my head while reading

  3. I think the movie really helped me understand Irene’s curiosity towards Clare because we were able to actually see how she looks at her. The body language and the long stares were clear that there was a strong desire on Irene’s part to understand Clare. While reading those scenes it’s easier to understand that interest because we watched it.

  4. I agree with your point on movie portray the character feelings more rather than book. Like the movie emphasize the hypocrisy, delusional and flaws of each character. Specifically Clares husband. While book gives us more of character thought process but not really the reaction, it was more subtle rather emphasize.
