Passing by Nella Larsen (the novel)

Passing Part 1 Encounter Hot Take

While reading Part One ‘Encounter’, in the novel Passing, it really emphasized a lot of things that I saw while watching the film. One thing in particular that stood out was that Clare is indeed the type of person who doesn’t mind taking risks. Her character is described this way even when Irene looks back at the Clare Kendry she remembered as a child. It seemed that she never shied away from risky situations and openly walked into them not caring if they came with unpleasant effects. It’s interesting because when you look at Clare she’s considered this angelic and beautiful creature. She manages to turn anyone’s head and then when you read about how she is described it puts her out to be pretty different. She’s reckless, selfish, and doesn’t seem to care.

  1. I agree that Clare is portrayed as a risk taker in the film but in the book it makes it seem like she is reckless. I think Clare being a risk taker upsets Irene because in the film Irene is seen passing but also is nervous while doing it and Clare does it with ease.
