Don Quixote (7:00-9:12)

One of the many themes in Don Quixote is deception. Deception is a statement or action that hides the truth. Don Quixote is obsessed with reading books about chivalry and romance. Chivalry is the medieval knightly system with its religious, moral, and social code. After reading all these books, Quixote decides to act on his chivalrous manners and try to fulfill his duty as a knight. His first attempt was a failure but he decides to try again. Accept, this time with a peasant named Sancho Panza. In return for Sancho’s services, Don Quixote promises to make Sancho the wealthy governor of an isle. On his journey he meets a woman, Dulcinea del Taboso, who he can envision as a princess.

During his second journey he starts chaos as he wrecks through the city. He becomes more of a criminal than a savior. He starts stealing from and hurting angry citizens because he believes they are a threat to his knighthood. His fellow partner, Sancho Panza, gets the “brunt of the punishments” caused by Quixote. But in the follow chapters, Quixote is deceived by most people he comes in contact with.

In the youtube video I have chosen. He explains how Sancho, who was the closest person to Don Quixote, deceived him the most. Sancho’s loyalty to Don Quixote forces him to resort to deception so he could get away with not doing things he should be doing. The Duke and the Duchess deceive both Sancho and Quixote as well. By inviting both Sancho and Quixote to the party, they fall in the trap where the Duke and Duchess scheme to deliberately deceive the two in order to make fun of them. Sancho also tried to deceive Sancho by saying Dulcinea turned into a peasant and Quixote made it his goal to get her back. But Sancho and the princess both knew of the plan. “Es natural condición de las mujeres desdeñar a quien las quiere y amar a quien las aborrece” which means “It is a natural condition of women to disdain whose who want them and love those who hate them”.

In the video, the guy summarizes that basically whats meant to happen in life is going to happen and he also summarizes Don Quixote by saying that Quixote believed that life is not about the truth all the time. Lies and truth are apart of life. “No matter how you play the game of life, it is all going to end and everything you know and love can change just like that.”
