Women in Accounting often face stereotypes and bias that makes it more difficult for them to succeed in the field compared to Men. In the Editor’s Pick for Sage Advice, Joanne Carew talks about the extra steps Women have to take, “Couple this with the gender imbalances across many industries, including finance and accounting, and it’s safe to say that women in business have a few mountains to climb to reach success.” but how women are proving people wrong. “But there are women overcoming the odds. Female entrepreneurs like Judy Diederick, Sam Nkabinde, and Tiziana Marsh are proof of what can be achieved when you aren’t afraid to challenge the status quo.” I look forward to being a part of this list of Women. Tiziana Marsh who started her own Accounting business over 10 years ago states “ There have even been cases where I haven’t gotten to an email immediately, and the client will then send a follow-up mail and copy my husband as if they are escalating the issue to a more senior party,” she notes. “It’s actually quite funny, and it’s become a bit of a running joke with some clients. But it shows that people still struggle to wrap their heads around the idea that a woman can be an entrepreneur on her own, without a man’s backing or support.” Why is it that clients add her husband to the emails? People often feel as if Women can’t be as good compared to Men in fields like Accounting. As a woman who plans on getting her CPA license right after she graduates and is looking to start her own Accounting company, Sam Nkabinde’s statement stood out to me. “I’m younger than people expect me to be, so they often assume that I must be a junior and I must be working for someone. They can’t believe I’m running my own business. I think there is a perception that women can’t start businesses on their own or that they can’t be in senior roles. This is something you have to challenge every day.” Her age and her being a woman should not be a factor that people take into consideration when determining her ability to do well in the field. These women are constantly proving people wrong. I will do the same.
