In my opinion, everything is exciting about NYC. Whether you live far away or right in the middle of this great city, there will never be enough time to experience all of the exciting features New York City has to offer. I have grown up and lived in NYC most of my life. I have experienced some time away in other cities but nothing compares. After every single vacation, even if it was just for a long weekend away, I am always excited to come back to my home. The thrill is in the air. The convenience of having everything readily at your fingertips is also a plus.
So much has evolved here and when I think about the new technology and business opportunities this city has created, I cannot believe what I have been a part of in my lifetime. The progress of this city is what makes it even more exciting as it continues to evolve.
The iconic skyline alone, whether traveling by plane, train or automobile, is something that gets your heart racing. We are home to many skyscrapers like the Empire State Building and architectural landmarks, such as the Brooklyn Bridge and the Statute of Liberty. You are never too far away from beauty, just a glimpse out the window. It is where everyone comes to be a star. Many artists have made their way to New York City to get a start on their career. To quote Alicia Keys in Jay Z’s song Empire State of Mind, “In New York, concrete jungle where dreams are made of, there’s nothing you can’t do, now you’re in New York” (Jay Z, 2009).
The use of social media and the creation of mobile apps have launched many business ideas. New York City is one of the best cities to try new business, because if you can make it here, you can make it anywhere. A few mobile apps have created such a convenience that go especially well with the New Yorker lifestyle. Because let’s face it, living in New York is a lifestyle that is fast-paced and we all know like to get things done quick and easy.
What excites me about NYC is the…
Evolution of transportation and commuting.
It is nice to have a car but living in the city it is not a necessity. It much cheaper to use the resources this city employs for us to be able to commute. The subway is one of the quickest ways of getting around the city. I remember how scary it was to ride the graffiti decked subways alone with my siblings when we were just in elementary school. So much has changed since then like going from using tokens to ride the train to the life of the Metro card. Kids these days would not know what a token is. There has been an immense transformation of our subway systems with newer cleaner train cars and stations. The use of digital maps and the installation of the countdown clocks. Now New Yorkers can know when their train is coming or going to be delayed, to be better plan for your trip.
And, of course, there is nothing like having the ability to travel 24/7. Our subway system travels 24 hours a day 7 days a week so there is not excuse not to get where you need to go.
John Raskin, Executive Director of the Riders Alliance stated, “As technology evolved, the MTA continued to look for ways to provide this information to riders, and they found an option that works. Subway riders don’t need 100% accuracy; we need to know generally when the train will come, so we can make educated choices about how to get around town. New Yorkers are an anxious people, but we’re calmer when we know where our train is. The MTA should expand this program as quickly as possible, and should make the information available online for riders to use.”

There are other methods of traveling around New York City as well. The water taxis can be an exciting adventure because it offers more of a scenic route when traveling between Brooklyn and Manhattan. Citi Bikes are another way of getting around the city. They are an affordable public bicycle sharing system that serves many neighborhoods. The bikes are conveniently docked at stations around the city and easily returnable so that you do not have to worry about the hassle of storing your bike somewhere.
With the creation of car sharing applications, finding a taxi is easier than ever. No longer do you have to stand on a corner to try to waive a taxi down and then argue with the driver about your destination. Uber provides an easy and convenient way to receive car service and pay for it all with the use of your mobile phone.
What excites me about NYC are the…
Many attractions New York City has to offer. There countless Broadway shows, off-Broadway theater, comedy shows, parks, sporting events to enjoy and not to mention the plethora of endless restaurants. You can enjoy any type of cuisine from around the world at almost any time of day here without having the use your passport. New York is home to many different ethnicities and cultures offering all kinds of dining options.
No matter how many times you visit or how long you have lived in New York City, there will always be something new to see and do. Each borough has something exciting to offer and with every season, there are new experiences.
It is especially great in the warmer seasons, like spring and summer where you can find many affordable and free attractions this city has to offer. Summer Stage is one of there, where many parks throughout the five boroughs offer creative productions for the audience who like to enjoy the arts.

What is also exciting and inspiring about this city is the development of dilapidated spaces that repurposed for public uses like the old west side elevated freight rail line, which is now the beautiful High Line Park in Chelsea. I had to pleasure taking a tour through the High Line before its completion. To see the transformation of what was once a rundown set of rail tracks to the now elevated park is a vast improvement to the community. It is amazing to see the transformations this city has gone through. I have been working in Chelsea for about 10 years and another major development in the neighborhood is the Hudson Yards area. It will be home to more office buildings, residential spaces and a shopping center, in the near future.
Shopping is another exciting reason to visit NYC. Whether you are into designer digs or are bargain shopper, New York City has whatever your heart desires. NY is a fashionista’s playground with places like Madison Avenue and 5th Avenue with big name designer shops and boutiques. There are a number of neighborhoods that will cater to your shopping needs such as Soho, Harlem, Herald Square holding home to one of the biggest department stores around as we know it Macy’s, Times Square and Union Square which holds an outside holiday market and the garment district to name a few.
Other than its attractions of places to go and things to do, another exciting element to this city is its personality. It is the core of its being. Growing up in a city like New York teaches you to be resilient. Every neighborhood has a diversified community that broadens your horizons and exposes you to different cultures. I have been through my fair share of catastrophes living in this city and after each one; you remember why this city is so great. New Yorkers may have a reputation for being impatient and rude but when tragedy strikes, there is no end to what people will go through to help someone in need. New York City is not for the faint of heart. There is nothing safe or familiar here but it is all safe and familiar to me. This city is not for everyone. Some people would rather live a quiet life in the suburbs or in another city that is not so fast but not me. Perhaps one day I will move on from here but not today.
