With my discussion of how short length videos are taking over much of our society’s media consumption, I have another video for you readers to watch! This particular youtube handle, The Second City Network, has 175k subscribers. One of their series is called “Sassy Gay Friend” it features a flamboyant man coming in to save the females’ lives in different stories such as Othello, Adam & Eve, Romeo & Juliet, and more. They are all satires that take place right before a women would take an action or make a decision that eventually leads to their death. It plays on the thoughts that many have while reading these books. Why would Desdemona stay in her bed when she knows her husband is about to come kill her? Why would Juliet kill herself over a man she met just this week? Why would Eve take a bite of the apple when she already has everything she needs? It questions the characters’ reasoning before it is too late. He forces them to take a logical approach while thinking about their situation. While this video doesn’t provide as much insight on the original play as the video in my previous post, it brings something else to the table. In my opinion the funniest part in the video was when the sassy gay friend says, “Does Moor mean more?” (I’m a stupid betch)” This doesn’t correlate much to the original book, but this video shows that there are different ways of expressing or engaging classics with a modern approach. I believe that the youtube handle has inspired other viewers to read or at the very least look further into some of these certain stories shown on their profile. This video in particular has over four million views! I’ve asked in previous blogs how would a “modern day” Othello appear, and this is an example of how someone may choose to portray the story. The play could be adapted to make Emilia Desdemona’s “Sassy Gay Friend” instead her attendant. It also works because now women have a stronger equal role in society and wouldn’t be afraid to speak up like they may have been in Othello‘s time frame.
