FInal Project Video on changing privacy setting

Spring Break

Filed under: Blog Assignment — Marian Roman at 10:24 am on Wednesday, April 18, 2012

During spring break I worked on my research for my presentation on privacy and security. I spent hours on the computer finding information on my topic and even found some interesting videos on the Internet. One of the videos I found was about employers searching facebook to find information about potential employers. They interviewed Clay Shirky to discuss the impact social networks are having on privacy. I found it interesting how he says ” what technology makes possible is colliding with our social sense” What I understood from this is that privacy is battling with technology, privacy is losing this battle because people share their personal information with the public. Check the video out.Facebook killed the private life

MacArthur and paywalls

Filed under: Blog Assignment — Marian Roman at 11:39 am on Monday, April 2, 2012

MacArthur has some valid points about being paid to write. This is his job nobody wants to work for free unless they are doing this as a hobby. At some point people can profit from there work especially if you take hours of your time creating something. It is nice to be able to read content online without having to pay for it too. Some of us still go to the store and pay for a copy of the printed newspaper. Some like to read the paper on the internet.  The internet allows for people to share content freely . But if a newspaper company decide they want charge to read thier internet material why should I be upset. Business is business companies need to make profit too so they can survive. I disagree with MacArthur when he says Internet reduces the value of writing. I feel it increases the value of writing. People have the opportunity to write even though they are not getting paid they are doing something they love. Writing can be a sense of relief it is their way of communicating with the world freely without restrictions.

The power of the Audience

Filed under: Blog Assignment — Marian Roman at 1:57 pm on Wednesday, March 21, 2012

After reading Jay Rosen blog post on “The People Formerly Known as the Audience” I  think about what shirky says  in “Cognitive Surplus” about people who buy a computer or cell phone the number of consumers and producers increases. This is what Rosen is also talking about when he refers to the audience shift in power. The computer and cell phone allow us to act like the media. We can blog, take pictures, make videos and report what we see and hear. Before all of this we relied on the media and we never responded. But as Rosen says “The writing Readers” now the readers are writing they are responding they are blogging and sharing with the world.

I have seen the changes an example of this is the news, they all have twitter and facebook accounts. People can write and report on anything they see and the news can check on it so they can report on it. I have been watching channel 11 since I was 12 years old and it was always the same. First the important headlines would come on, then the weather then sports. Now it has changed people can tweet and facebook the reporters they can ask questions. Channel 11 has a segment in which they help people when they are having a problem or trying to help the community. It still reports the important headlines but now the audience is getting involved. Another example that I seen is also on channel 11 one of their reporters his name is Greg Mocker he usually reports on the MTA. Now he gets his stories from people around NYC who have issues with the bus stations and train stations in thier neighborhoods. The way he communicates with the people is through Twitter. He almost uses the people to work for him and find him stories specifically on the MTA to report on. People are happy to send him suggestions on this. Reporters depending on the people might have sounded crazy back then, but what Mocker does is brilliant. He can’t go around checking every bus stop ot train station so he uses the audience.

One more example on how people are contributing is when the NBA had their annual Slam Dunk Contest. Usually they pick 3 judges to vote on  the best slam dunk this year they did it different. They had the audience vote on the winners using cell phones, and computers. It shows how they are now using the people to participate in the decisions it the same as american Idol. The audience is beginning to speak they are writting, reporting, and making videos they are making a difference to the world.

My Creative Act

I finally got this done after trying for one hour to post this on the MEME website. I chose this picture because it seem easy to add any caption to this picture. At first I had trouble trying to get the picture uploaded but after trying several times I finally was able to post it. It is pretty simple to set up an account but they need to have better instruction on how to upload. To me this really is a waste of time if I were to be doing it for fun. I don’t see myself doing this again unless  professor Gershovich assign this again.

Too Much TV = Addiction

Filed under: Blog Assignment — Marian Roman at 11:22 am on Monday, March 5, 2012

As a person who loves to watch television I agree with Shirky’s connection with Television and Gin. Maybe I have an addiction because I can watch Television all day sometimes repeats of the same show. Especially when school is over and I have that break I will watch Television everyday. I really don’t get out much I have two kids and so its really hard to get out. It really is additive and I want to stop. I did cut back on television when school started but I would like to cut it out competely. Shirky mention that” Americans watch roughly two hundred billion hours of TV every year” I believe it. Unfortuatly I am one of those american and it really drives me crazy. Some people can sit in front of a computer watching videos or shows for hours and some watch TV for hours. It is all the same. I need to cut back on the hours of television my family watches. Doing things that do not involve a TV and getting out of the house are probably the best way.

Chocolate Chip Cookies

Filed under: Blog Assignment — Marian Roman at 2:08 pm on Sunday, February 26, 2012

One of my favorite things to eat is chocolate. I love chocolate chip cookies especially and so I would like to share a recipe on how to make these delicious cookies.

Start by preheating your oven to 350 degress F. Get yourself  2 large bowls where you will be able to mix the ingredients also a non stick baking sheet to place the cookies in.

Things that go in the bowl:

  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1tsp baking soda
  • 2 cups of all purpose flour
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 sticks of butter
  • 3/4 of sugar
  • 3/4 brown sugar
  • 1 package of chocolate chips

Start by mixing flour, baking soda and salt in a bowl.In the other bowl mix the butter, sugar and brown sugar than add 1 egg at a time than once you added both eggs mix in the rest of the ingredients from the first bowl. Slowly add the chocolate chips in the bowl. Now you take a small round spoon take some mix and drop it on the baking sheet. This recipe makes about 4 dozens. Bake for 9-11 minutes depends are good your oven is. Once they are out of the oven make sure to cool them before removing them from the baking sheet. When they have finally cooled down pour yourself a glass of cold milk grab a cookie and enjoy!

Manovich on Media

Filed under: Blog Assignment — Marian Roman at 11:26 am on Monday, February 20, 2012

Media has improved over the years becoming an important thing in our lives. Manovich describes how both old and new media are different in some ways. I especially found interesting his explanation on numerical representation. He describes it as “mathematical functions”which makes sense cause computer programs are just a series of zeros and ones. When we download photos we can change the size and angle on it. You can even change certain things or erase something on the picture. These numbers are invisible what we see is a picture. I remember watching a show on T.V and they found a photo which had been changed. Behind the photo was secret information which consisted of numbers. I thought it was cool how they were able to hide this information behind an innocent picture. Your looking at a photo of the beach as they zoom in you see codes which changes the picture entirely.

It is amazing how math is involved in media just to change characterictics of the picture we need math . Even film is broken up into a number of samples as described by Manovich. Math is important even in media we use numbers to create things. Media is so important in our lives what would a world without media be like. It is hard to think about that because we cannot image ourself without this media tool. We rely too much on media so without it we probably have a hard time adjusting to life.

Social Network_You Tube

Filed under: Blog Assignment — Marian Roman at 11:55 pm on Wednesday, February 8, 2012

So I would like to write about You Tube and the first time I decided to search for something on this social network. I went to the dentist  and he advise me to have my wisdom teeth pulled out. He gave me 2 option. The first was to be put to sleep and have all 4 remove the same day. The second was to be awake and they would numb one side than I would come back and have the other side done. I was really scared and decided to look for videos on wisdom teeth. I was really amazed on how many videos they had on it. They even had professional videos that were provided by dentist to show how the wisdom teeth would be pulled out. I finally decided to be put to sleep because after watching all these videos I could not bear the thought to be awake while the doctor is drilling my mouth, cutting gums, and pulling teeth.

Another time I used You Tube was to learn how to put eyeshadow on. Now I know other female students can relate to this . I had to attend a wedding and really wanted to look my best. I hardly wear makeup but when I do wear it I do a bad job putting it on. So I decided to look for videos that would help and found some interesting tutorials on how to apply makeup. So after watching this I did some shopping bought some makeup accessories and did some practice at home. It really help and I am doing a better job at applying makeup. So I really do feel that social networks help with certain things they all have unique features. You tube especially has great potiental you can find anything on this social network. Even talent has been found on this as well as tutorials that help people understand and learn things.
