To Earth Day with Love From New York

New York went green on April 21 to April 24 in a few of the city’s popular hotspots like Union Square and Grand Central.

Earth Day New York hosted an annual event to commemorate Earth Day, celebrated on April 22. The eco-fest took place near Grand Central Terminal, nestled in a hidden area of The Campbell Apartment on Vanderbilt Ave and E. 43rd Street.

Various organizations in attendance either sold merchandise or informed people on environmental issues by providing pamphlets, handouts, small booklets and throwing in free gifts.

Many New York environmental groups like Earth Day New York, founded in late 1989, aim to educate the public and promote awareness of the environmental issues the world and the United States are facing like climate change as a result of not recycling and composting. They also mention other alternatives people can incorporate in their daily lives to help the earth.

The eco-fest had few visitors at the beginning and then more and more visitors trickled in during the day.

Jacklyn Mallon, a New York resident attended the eco-fest with the intention of learning something new.

“I wanted to learn, see if there was anything that I needed to learn, mostly compost, what else I needed to learn about green and to use it,” Mallon said.

Earth Day, an annual event, traces its roots back to the 1960s when Senator Gaylord Nelson demanded politicians to resolve the environmental issues and educated the public on the problems affecting the planet. After many Americans demonstrated in various US cities, Congress established a new agency called the U.S Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in 1970, according to the EPA .

Video Pitch

Stephanie Ortigoza-

For my final project, I would like to do it on the recycling program in New York City. We, as a whole, generate a lot of trash so I want to talk about the importance of recycling and what the consequences would be if we disregard it. I plan on interviewing several organizations as potential subjects for this assignment.

For the video portion of the project, the scenes that I would want to capture are people littering, others recycling, volunteers informing the public about the importance of recycling and other relevant info.

I am not sure how I am planning to tell the story. Maybe I can have like a photo slideshow and video that capture the whole concept of the recycling program and how it is going to be significant for us and for others in the future. The writing portion would entail subject’s quotes and other important information regarding the program.

Pitch

For my photo essay, I plan to do it on Little Brazil which is located on 46th Street between Fifth and Sixth Avenues in Manhattan. This small neighborhood is only a block catered to  Brazilian restaurants and other businesses. Although many are unfamiliar with this neighborhood, nonetheless, it is the destination for many Brazilians. Personally I have never tasted Brazilian food before and I can only assume some New Yorkers have not done so as well. Other Latino neighborhoods such as Dominicans, Mexicans or Puerto Ricans are well known, but Little Brazil seems to be blurred out of the picture.

I would like to focus more on the cultural aspects of this block like the food, people and products and the difference between the” old Little Brazil” and the “new Little Brazil.” This vicinity seems interesting and according to zonalatina.com, there are about 76,257 Brazilian Americans living in New York City. Little Brazil was an important place for Brazilians in the past, but many of them moved to other parts of the city like Astoria, Queens. I wonder if many of the restaurants found in Little Brazil today were the ones originally established in the neighborhood. I think this neighborhood matters because it is an important place in the city and deserves some acknowledgement.

I am going to tell the story by taking pictures of the restaurants, interviewing customers, managers, employees or just anyone who would contribute to my story and find old pictures of Little Brazil from a long time ago. I plan to do some research on who the neighborhood belonged to before it became a Brazilian spot.

I should tell the story because I am fascinated by all the diversity in the city and am curious as to what Little Brazil is all about and how is it different from before.

Memo

I have two topics that I would like to write about for this class, one would include arts and culture.  New York City offers various stories about different cultures since this is a diverse city. I would write about communities or neighborhoods that are unfamiliar to New York residents. Many groups live in several neighborhoods in the city that originate from Latin America, Asia, Africa and Europe. However, I have always wondered if there is even a Brazilian or Paraguayan neighborhood here since many who reside here are of Mexican, Dominican, Puerto Rican, Ecuadorian, Argentinian or other backgrounds. For the arts, I would write about interesting museums, events or plays that are important to New York residents or people who are involved in the arts that have interesting stories to tell the world.

Regarding choosing multimedia elements, for culture I would choose photos and probably videos, only if there is some movement occurring or something unordinary. For the arts, perhaps photos or a podcast if I would to write a story about a play or a museum. If I were to write about an artist or someone in the arts field, I would include a video.

The second topic I would write about would either be about the environment or about animals. I love animals and I think animal cruelty is a big issue, at least for me it is. Poor animals are used for experiments and I think it’s unfair for them.  Also, stories about the environment involving global warming and the use of fossil fuels never seems to get old and surprisingly as the years pass by, the idea of global warming sounds more logical and real. If I were to use some of the multimedia elements for animal cruelty, it would be a podcast and for the environment, video or photos.
