Assignments/Due Dates

Assignment #1: Photo Essay

Pitch for photo essay due by class time on Thursday, Sept. 7.

Photo scavenger hunt due by class time on Thursday, Sept. 14.

Final photo essay due by class time on Thursday, Oct. 5.

NO CLASS ON TUESDAY, OCT. 10. (Class follows a Monday schedule.)

I will be away on Thursday, Oct. 12; Prof. Vera Haller will be filling in for me.

Assignment #2: Radio Story

Rough draft of script is due Thursday, Nov. 2. On this day, we won’t have class as normal; you will all sign up for a one-on-one editing session with me over Zoom. I’ll send out a sign-up sheet as it gets closer.

Final radio story is due Thursday, Nov. 7.

The radio story should be 3-4 minutes long (not including the host intro). It needs to include sound bites from at least two different people, and must include at least one natural sound. You will submit the actual audio file as a Soundcloud link, along with your final script and ONE photo.

Assignment #3: Video Story

Your practice assignment is to shoot a five-shot sequence along with a brief, 30-to-45-second interview. You do not need to submit these to me yet, but bring the footage with you to class on Tuesday, Nov. 27, because we will be using them in a video editing workshop. Details in this post.

Your practice assignment will be due by class time on Tuesday, Dec. 5. If you need to edit outside of class and don’t have the ability to do so at home, I recommend the computers on the 6th floor, which have Adobe Premiere installed.

Your big project assignment is to film and edit a two-to three-minute non-narrated and character-driven video story. Being character-driven, it does not need to be quite as news-driven as your other assignments, and it’s okay if it focuses on one person only. I’m not requiring you to include multiple voices in this story.

It should be a visual story with ample opportunity for B-roll. Think something process-oriented, like an artist at work, or a day in the life of a small business owner or athlete.

We will devote class time on Dec. 5 and 7 to in-class editing and production. Your video stories will be due by class time on your last day of class, Tuesday Dec. 12.
