The Botanic Garden’s 30TH Annual Sakura Matsuri , a celebration of japanese cultural dance , music, fashion, and sword fighting
A large tent stands in the Cherry Esplanade at the Botanic garden, where thousands of people gathered for “ A day in Japan,” with performances by Soh Daiko, Dancejapan, the Samurai Sword Soul, Taiko Masala, and a traditional Kimono fashion show.
A thunderous performance by Soh Daiko kicks off the event, with load, and rhythmic beatings of the drums. Men and women drummers on all sides of the stage playing at the same time , but each playing at a different rhythm and pace.
“ We are very honored to have a group , that premiers women drummers , wish is not the usual,” said Anita Jacobs the director of public programs at the Botanic garden. “ The drumming is a load ancient form of art used as a call to war.”
Dancejapan with Sachiyo Ito follows the drumming with softer and spiritual dance music. Every dance had its own meaning, and dressing of the Kimono, like the flower dance and the Kabuki. Part of the dancejapan performance was the good luck dragon. The dragon runs around the stage, throws candy to the children, all while trying to catch a man to give a bight for one year of good luck.
“ A beautiful classical dance company directed by Sachiyo Ito, which choreographs different dances each year,” said Ms Jacobs. “ She includes the Nihon Buyo as well as other elegant old tradition dances.”
The crowd later learns some self defense with the Samurai Sword Soul, presenting a sword fight between two groups of martial arts warriors for the release of the captured princess.
“ A drama group which have been with us for 10 years, created by Yoshi Amal , a master of Samurai sword fighting,” said Anita Jacobs. “ They are professional black belts, theatrical, fun music, play different character every year.”
While Taiko Masala is also a drumming group they add a unique style of Brooklyn to their performance. “ A wonderful thing a like to think about Taiko Masala , is that Hero the leader of the group hand makes all the drums, some of the drums are 5 to 6 feet crafted from the ground up,” said Ms Jacobs. “ Very athletic performances with some dancing involved.”
A colorful ending of the Sakura Matsuri with the Kimono fashion show , displaying the furisode, Odori Katamigawari, Houmongi, and the Tomesode.
The Sakura Matsuri is a Japanese traditional event which is part of the Botanic gardens Cherry Blossom festival. Each year they have “ A day in Japan.”

SOBER ST PATRICK’S DAY
Sober ST Patrick’s day At Cathedral High School NYC, an alcohol free celebration for the whole Family.
The gym filled with green everywhere, from table cloth , decorations, children face painted with the sober ST Patrick’s day symbol, students and staff wearing costume made SSPD T-shirts.
Famous singer Cathy Maguire begins the event with “Molly Malone” a popular song from Dublin, Ireland. As she sings a couple glides across the stage, slow dancing to the soft guitar playing of Donny Carroll.
“I bought these tickets four months in advance,” said Mary Anderson, as she watched the Tulia pipe Band circling around the crowd , beating to the drums. “It’s nice to see a little bit of Ireland in NYC.”
Later the Donny golden school dance students take the floor. Taping routines of the Ceili. The ceili has over 30 routines. The art of this dance is quick movements of the legs and feet , while the rest of the body is still.
You can’t leave an Irish celebration without learning how to dance like them. Maureen Donachie the associate producer leads the guests to the Irish dance steps known as Jigs (to jump).
“We leave the NYC Parade by 4pm and start are own celebration here,” said Maureen Donachie. “It’s important to show children that ST Patrick’s day isn’t all about the drinking, and that lots of culture goes along with this holiday.”
The Rose tralee 2013 winner Kathleen Mulholland , Miss USA’s Erin Brady, and Politician Joe Crowley made special guest appearances in honor of a sober ST Patrick’s day. In addition to the event , were the unique instrumental playings of Haley Richardson, the 11 year old All- Ireland Fiddle champion, and songs of UCD Choral Scholars.
The night ends with a group photo to be posted on twitter representing the success of the Sober ST Patrick’s Day event.
