Multimedia Reporting Spring 2021

Extremis

What really surprised me before I even started watching the documentary was the fact that is only 24 minutes.  It is short yet it captures so many emotions. The director can encapsulate what the families of the families were feeling. The decision to unplug the life support is a grand one. Another great thing was the shot of all the doctors talking about whether to pull the plug on a man or not. It really goes to show how much thought is put into a decision like that.  The great thing about the documentary is that it included what the family members were thinking and how they were willing to deal with the situation presented to them.

One thing that struck my mind is that these doctors have to deal with the emotional aftermath. There have really been shots that show how the doctor was dealing with telling so many people that they had to consider unplugging the life support. Dealing with this stuff daily can really change a person. They can easily become more cynical and desensitized, but they show remorse and empathy for the patients and their families. All in all, the documentary really showed what debilitating diseases can do the psyche of a patient, their families, and doctors alike.
