Sad Music

Sadness is not an emotion that people like to feel.  Although people try to avoid that feeling, why do people choose to listen to sad music? A gloomy piece is supposed to make us feel gloomy but, research shows that people do not react that way at all.  According to the study, the tragic emotion that was expected was surprisingly replaced with feelings of love and romance.  So why do we listen to sad music?  We listen to sad music because it does not connect directly to our real lives.

NYMIA

NYMIA is the New York Music Industry Association, a club that meets every Thursday, during club hours in 4-112. In this club we focus on creating music, by collaborating between members, we also discuss new music releases. But we also focus on the business side, there are always speakers from important production companies like Sony, talking about touring, managing and producing. And of course, there is always food!

This is the only music club at Baruch, and it is filled with easy going people that have no trouble to collaborate with you, if you are interested in creating a tune.

Here it’s a video of a NYMIA member called Kevin (Yev Visao), performing his new song called “Rearview” with the help of the club president Max (keyboard) and other club members.

Miley Cyrus Not Actually Crazy?

Picture 19

Well, yes she might actually be crazy, but that’s no reason to crowd her with judgements! She’s simply growing out of her shell. After her tongue-infested performance at the VMAs, Miley’s reputation exploded. Some viewers have slutshamed her and deemed her an attention-seeking lunatic, but with her emerging popularity, she has also gained an incredible amount of “Smilers”, or supporters of Miley. It’s clear that the newly invented pop singer has become more of a celebrity by her actions rather than her art. She’s cut her hair off, basically cut her clothes off, and seems to be interested in the hip-hop lifestyle with her gold chains and substituting the letter “s” for the letter “z”, But, she’s not the only pop star to act out. Britney Spears, K$sha, Lady Gaga, they’re all nuts. So, to the haters, let Miley live! Let her lash out and change up her act and go to town with giant foam fingers. She’s experimenting with the pop culture and is laughing her way all the way to the bank. Her haters (and supporters) should all find something better to do with their lives than be judgmental about a celebrity.

Saving NYC’s Opera

New York City’s beloved Metropolitan Opera House, opened in 1966, is going baroque (pun intended). In an failed effort to raise a quick 7 million dollars to save the Opera House, general manager George Steel found himself scraping up bits of money from all over the 5 boroughs. After filing for chapter 11 bankruptcy and no investors willing to cough up the cash, the opera was forced to drastically cut down on it’s performances. Mayor Bloomberg, advocate of the arts, stated that he nor the cit was going to step in to save the City Opera, claiming they had a bad business model. It’s true that the City Opera has made some bad financial decisions in the past, solidified by the countless rejections of donations after the company released its 7 million dollar cry for help. With so little shows playing, the City Opera faces a catch-22 with no revenue coming in from their lack of ability to fund an abundance of shows. Within in the next year or so, it is safe to assume that the Metropolitan Opera House will no longer be in business.

Combine Sounds; Hear What Happens

http://www.nytimes.com/2013/10/13/arts/music/combine-sounds-hear-what-happens.html?ref=music

Ben Vida, a guitarist and trumpeter from a Chicago quartet called Town & Country, switched sweet ballads for dancing tunes. He’s making abstract electronic music that combines analog and digital synthesizers. By evoking sounds of acoustic instruments and nature sounds, a very relaxing tune is achieved.

He’ll be playing a new piece, “Damaged Particulates,” this week. (8 p.m. Thursday, Issue Project Room, 22 Boerum Place, Downtown Brooklyn, 718-330-0313, issueprojectroom.org; $10 suggested donation.)

Angst Endures for a Pioneer of Grunge

http://www.nytimes.com/2013/10/15/arts/music/new-music-from-pearl-jam-paul-mccartney-and-cassadee-pope.html?pagewanted=1&ref=music&_r=0

Pearl Jam, Paul McCartney and Cassadee Pope have new tunes to delight their fans. Pearl Jam’s new material “Lightning Bolt”, touches themes such as self-doubt, loss, abusive relationships and political fury.  Although the theme is the same, it is not as raw as their previous materials.

Paul McCartney on the other hand, continues with very colourful pop songs with his new record called “New”. He had four producers, one of them being the son of the legendary Brian Epstein (who adapted The Beatles’s songs for the musical Love).

“Frame by Frame” is the first solo album by Cassadee Pope. The majority of the songs in the record are ballads, and the album was produced in Nashville, TN
