Saving NYC’s Opera

New York City’s beloved Metropolitan Opera House, opened in 1966, is going baroque (pun intended). In an failed effort to raise a quick 7 million dollars to save the Opera House, general manager George Steel found himself scraping up bits of money from all over the 5 boroughs. After filing for chapter 11 bankruptcy and no investors willing to cough up the cash, the opera was forced to drastically cut down on it’s performances. Mayor Bloomberg, advocate of the arts, stated that he nor the cit was going to step in to save the City Opera, claiming they had a bad business model. It’s true that the City Opera has made some bad financial decisions in the past, solidified by the countless rejections of donations after the company released its 7 million dollar cry for help. With so little shows playing, the City Opera faces a catch-22 with no revenue coming in from their lack of ability to fund an abundance of shows. Within in the next year or so, it is safe to assume that the Metropolitan Opera House will no longer be in business.
