The Enlightenment was a period in which civilians began to question their way of living. People began to view their society differently, they questioned the power of the authority and the factors that influenced their way of living. However, the civilians are highly discouraged due to the potential consequences (Kant, Pg. 105).The era was a time in which people were encouraged to speak out about their doubts and opinions on subjects, that perhaps, were never questioned before. The philosophers presented, had different approaches on how and why the people should reevaluate their view on society and how they should live their lives.
The text that was I able to agree with is “What is Enlightenment?” by Immanuel Kant. Kant mentions that the people should obey the laws that are placed upon them but have the ability to express their opinions and concerns (Pg.107 ). He highly disliked people who settled with the beliefs of the “guardians” because they relied on someone else rather than thinking for themselves. He encouraged the people to step out of the authoritative control to gain freedom. Gaining freedom will result to becoming independent, making choices and thinking for oneself that can perhaps improve one’s life than if they were to stick to the status quo.
