Daniel Rawson- “Some say plants don’t speak”
“Dream on and on of expiring life’s eternal spring and the perennial freshness of fields and souls even though these burn up and those wither”. In the first half of the poem De Castro portrays the beauty of nature and how it is underappreciated by people every day. Even though De Castro ends the poem with a slightly negative tone it is merely to acknowledge nature will not be around forever and everything has an expiration date. This was relatable to her life because De Castro predicted her life would end prematurely and it came to fruition, De Castro passed from cancer when she was in her mid 40’s. The beatification of nature in the poem is seen starting in the opening line of the poem and the spiritual connection De Castro had with nature is evident from the title, “Some say plants don’t speak”.
