Frederich Nietzsche’s On Truth and Lie in an Extra-Moral Sense discusses human intellect. Nietzsche’s believe’s that intellect is only for humans and prevents humans from learning about the world around them
Nietzsche’s argument is intellect makes humans weaker and only the weaker species needs intellect. Nietzsche says, ” After all it was given only as an aid to the most unfortunate, most delicate, most evanescent beings in order to hold them for a minute in existence”(pg1). Nietzsche is saying the soul purpose of intellect is to accommodate the weaker beings living in nature because they are too weak to fully grasp the meaning of nature. In addition to this Nietzsche states, ” We still do not know where the urge for truth comes from; for as yet we have heard only of the obligation imposed by society that it should exist: to be truthful means using the customary metaphors—in moral terms: the obligation to lie according to a fixed convention, to lie herd-like in a style obligatory for all”(pg1) Nietzsche is trying to say that mans truth is because of societal expectations. Society forcing man to uncover some sort of truth isn’t really they wanting to understand the world.
Nietzsche believing that humans are a weaker species than the creatures around them make sense because unlike humans animals are driven by their born intuition. Humanity is driven by what humans deemed to be expectable. I agree that if humans do not look further into the truth they will never truly understand nature or the world around them.
