While looking at their website today, I learned today that the NYC Board of Education has a posting of grade by grade information skills and priority benchmark skills relating to information fluency. I thought the grade 12 skills might be of particular interest.

Finding SEC filings by non-US companies by industry sector
In response to an inquiry on the Business Librarians listserv today asking for help in locating 20F filings (the annual filing made with the SEC) by non-US oil and gas companies, I was reminded that the NYSE has a listing of the non-US companies and one may select different industry sectors at : http://www.nyse.com/about/listed/lc_ny_industry_1.html?ListedComp=NONUS. The companies’ hyperlinks include a tab for SEC filings, as well as the companies’ homepages, which would have links to the filings. (Canadian companies may file a 40-F, rather than a 20-F).
The other exchanges could be searched for other listed companies.
Audit Analytics offers a choice to search for US, Canadian and foreign companies that could be used to identify the companies and the oil and gas industry may be divided into those involved in wells and drilling, extraction, and support activities. There would be links to the filings available.
Edgar Online I-Metrix enables one to search by industry, SEC form number, and by listed exchange. (The initial inquirer didn’t have access to those databases.)

The Points of Light Institute recently released a new report updating standards for data collection, report metrics, and indicators of community involvement among corporations to assist corporations in measuring the impact of employee volunteer programs.
Deloitte report on Media Consumption habits across generations
Deloitte has issued Media Consumption Habits Across Generations: Rethinking What You Know, which is discussed in a podcast with a transcript available. Among the discussion points is the continual importance of television to people and the popularity of smartphones. It is the latest in a series of reports on media and democracy.
New database added: APA e-books
We have purchased all e-books published by APA from 2001 to 2010. They are now available by going to our database list. MARC records will be eventually loaded into the catalog as well. Enjoy!
Bloomberg Law
Yesterday’s Wall Street Journal had an article about Bloomberg entering the legal research market in competition with LexisNexis and Westlaw. The Journal says this is only one product in Bloomberg’s push away from the “terminal.” Other products in the pipeline are a data service for the sports industry and one that covers the interactions of government and business. Read the article “Bloomberg hangs a new shingle” in the July 8, 2010 issue.
Smarter or Dumber
If you read the Saturday essay in the June 4th Wall Street Journal where Clay Shirkey and Nicholas Carr faced off on the question “Does the internet make you smarter or dumber?,” you might want to read more at the Edge Foundation website. The Edge Annual Question for 2010 is “How is the internet changing the way you think?.” In their World Question Center you will find essays from over 170 members of the Edge community, names like Esther Dyson, Kevin Kelly, Richard Dawkins and Nissim Taleb. You will also find a collection of articles from newspapers and magazines from around the world that have responded to the question.
Datastream Login Problem
Datastream was not available today, and displayed an error message “Service Closed LogonID Suspended” when users attempted to run requests. This was apparently the result of someone attempting to change the account password. I worked with Thomson Reuters support this evening and we reset the account. The application is now working properly on the pc’s at the Reference Desk. I will email tech support at the vertical campus with the fix for installations on faculty pc’s.
