DECEMBER’S PICK OF THE MONTH

The Guardians of the Galaxy
Not since the original Star Wars trilogy have movie-goers been treated to such an amazing trip to unimaginative worlds brimming with action and humor.

December’s pick of the month is The Guardians of the Galaxy. I doubt you’d believe me if I told you that one of the year’s best films featured a talking tree, an insane musclebound alien, a green female assassin, a rodent with a penchant for blowing things up, and a trash-talking Earthling. However, this is exactly the case.

Just released on Blu-ray, DVD, and streaming services, Guardians of the Galaxy is not just one of the year’s best, it’s one of the genre’s best. James Gunn brings stunning visuals to life and intertwines heartache, humor, and edge-of-your seat thrills in a terrific way that is rarely seen.

Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper,  and Lee Pace all bring their A-game to a film that could easily have become a parody of itself. Instead, they made the film a true thrill ride fraught with emotion and suspense.

NOVEMBER’S PICK OF THE MONTH

Captain America: The Winter Soldier
Trust, freedom, politics, and good ol’ hand-to-hand combat are all expertly woven together in this masterpiece from the Russo brothers. 

My pick of the month is the action/adventure, comic book, political thriller super-sequel Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Marvel Studios can now firmly put another notch in their money belt with this thrilling follow-up to 2011’s Captain America: The First Avenger and 2012’s The Avengers.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier finds Steve Rogers, the titular hero’s alias, further coming to terms with his rather peculiar situation. Defrosted 70 years after defeating the villainous Red Skull and plunging into an icy slumber, Captain America is trying to find his place in a brave new world, and more specifically in the organization, S.H.I.E.L.D., that he works for.

The cast, which includes Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Samuel Jackson, and Robert Redford drive the film and bring an air of seriousness to a story that has its roots in a star-spangled comic book.

With nonstop twists and turns, and more action than you can throw a shield at, Captain America: The Winter Soldier is one of the best movies of 2014, and among the top action movies of all time. That’s right: it deserves a spot alongside the James Bond, Die Hard, Terminator, and Indiana Jones films that have defined the genre. The standout of this movie is, hands down, its fight scenes. Mixing multiple forms of martial arts and seamless choreography, the Russo brothers brought to the screen the best hand-to-hand fight scenes in cinema history. It will be of no surprise to me if in fifty years, this movie is to fight scenes what Bullitt has become to chase scenes.

With a gripping story, talented cast, and explosive fight scenes, Captain America: The Winter Soldier is among the year’s best. View the trailer below, and check it out on Blu-ray, DVD, and streaming services today!
