The Rhetorical Situation

Summary:

Bitzer discusses the Rhetorical Situation. The rhetorical situation is the context of a rhetorical event that consists of an issue, an audience, and a set of constraints. He talks about rhetorical discourse. Bitzer makes six major points in this article. He discusses how any rhetorical situation needs a proper response or a response that fits the situation and how a situation structure is important. He also talks about how situations need grow and mature. He mostly sums up the rules we should follow in order to properly use rhetorical situation.

Response:

This article on Rhetorical Situation wasn’t very helpful to me. It was really repetitive and long and I thought it could be shorter and more to the point. Although he did help point out major points about rhetorical situation I think there is probably a better article for me to better understand rhetorical situation.

Question:

Why is rhetorical situation important in this class?

Emma Watson’s speech about feminism:

Exigence: The exigence or problem in Emma Watson’s speech is feminism. She discusses how big this issue is in our society today and how it’s our choice to make a change.

Audience: The audience that Emma Watson tries to connect with in her speech is not only women and men at the UN but everyone around the world that can help her movement, HeforShe. She stresses the fact that this feminist movement isn’t just for women, it’s for men too and she urges that men take action with her.

Constraints: Some of the constraints, as Emma mentions, are her nervousness and her association with Harry Potter. She jokes about both but they can effect her speech and the whether she is taken seriously rather than as some famous person.

  1. You did a really good job elaborating your ideas. Well done. I also like your response for audience when you were talking about Emma Watson.
