Teachable Moment Abstract – 206 Words
The process of moving into my first apartment was fairly easy, as my current roommate was already six months into the lease so I didn’t have to do any of the hard work of actually finding an apartment and paying all the fees necessary to get a lease. The hardest work I had to do was buy and build my furniture. That all changed when our lease was ending in the summer, and my roommate and I desperately tried to find a new apartment. Dealing with the sweltering heat, competition from other people looking for cheap 2-bedroom apartments now that COVID rates were ending, and a watchful eye from my parents hounding me about if I found a new apartment yet led to the toughest 4 months of my life in spring and summer of 2022. I knew that moving into my own place is one step in adulthood everyone has to take and it’s not easy, but that summer completely altered the way I viewed becoming an independent adult. Obviously becoming an adult is not going to be easy, but being as prepared as you can and taking advice from elders is helpful and, I think many people my age don’t realize that.
